Internal BT Exchange Box : Who is responsible?

In our main school office we have a couple of BT boxes that contain all the wiring for the internal phones. The School is in the process of a major refurb and the Office will move to another part of the building. The current office will become a changing room. Don't really think the BT Boxes should be in the changing rooms so I wondered who would be the correct organisation to contact to get a quote on moving them? We have a store room just behind the wall where the boxes are mounted so they could easily be shifted into that. Is it OpenReach?

If it is BT cabling, then it's openReach, but all our internal extensions is done by our telephone support company or myself

We have these, and they're specifically labelled as "CUSTOMER OWNED". I'd be pretty sure that they're up to you, OpenReach's bit will be the incoming lines to the patch panel.

We are moving to VoIP so the only "lines" we need is the circuit that the VoIP goes down and the RedCare Alarm number. All internal extensions will be VoIP.

Is it best to just box it up and leave it where it is as @Boredguy suggests?

I'd box it and leave it, personally (with a removable panel screwed over them). While you won't need the cabling for your VOIP setup, it won't harm to have it intact and will save a packet in moving it (any extending may be a nightmare).

We had to contact OpenReach when we wanted to get our old system tided up, which was trying to remove as many of the 9 of these that we had. Took about 9 months though with a 'full survey' (guy came, took photos, commented he wasn't sure why they sent him, and the photos were lost as no one from then on had ever seen them), and they sub-contracted it out to a company that destroyed various lines. Whole process was tedious, long winded and we never knew what was going on, with periods of absolute silence with no easy way to follow up.

 

Boxing it in sounds an easier prospect.

 

EDIT: ohh and the cost was stupid in the end for the service we got.

tbh when it comes to OpenReach it's always a pain. Technically still waiting after 18 months for a quote to move cables for a refurb.. they have been dangling from the scaffold for the last 5 weeks without any issue.

 

So yea, get them to box in the cabinets with a panel that can be removed if you ever need to gain access. Just remember to mark it's location

We have two of the smaller 20 pair boxes in a room that used to be the main reception, quoted £1,500 + VAT to move them to an external box outside about 8 years ago - Literally the other side of the wall so it'd take someone maybe an hour to do and no cable extending or anything needed. (They got left where they were in the end, insane price as at the time we only had one of the pairs in use).

 

Box it in, saves all the hassle. Doesn't hurt them if they get a bit wet anyway, there's nothing to them just punch jacks (or in the case of our ancient ones, screw terminals)
