Currently going through the process of migrating user home drives and shared drives to OneDrive and SharePoint online.

Home drives have been linked to OneDrive using KFM, and shared drives have been migrated to document libraries in various SharePoint sites.

Unfortunately historically they've just used one shared drive for a lot of the school's information, and all the teachers' department files, and one shared drive for subject data that the students need access to during lessons. So there's a massive amount of data there (takes 4 days to migrate!).

In order to keep things as simple as possible (for the teachers), I'm using the GPO "Configure team site libraries to sync automatically" so the document libraries appear in File Explorer.

Files on demand is enabled.

The thing is, the OneDrive client still scans through the document libraries, I presume in order to index them, and while doing this it doesn't synchronise updates to their OneDrive folder.

Not so much of a problem with staff as their computers will be on for hours at a time, but for students it would be a real issue, especially as I've had to disable roaming profiles because for some reason OneDrive would run the first time a student logged onto a PC, but if they then logged on again, or onto another PC, OneDrive just wouldn't kick in.

Is there anyway to stop this scanning of shared libraries?

Otherwise I'm going to have to give the students a link to the website of the library and have them use that.

I couldn't find a way, and nor could I get past the maximum 5,000 files limit. All in all it would either not work properly or grind to a halt.

I'm deploying the SharePoint portals via a simple shortcut and leaving OneDrive for Business to sync its own stuff. It does work well like that.

Have you tried Microsoft Stream for video deployment yet? It's excellent. The only problem is yet more uploading!

We're currently using IAMCloud Drive Mapper to map sharepoint libraries. However we've also got a PowerShell script under test that auto syncs specific and multiple libraries after user logon (the OneDrive client already auto signs in on user logon). From reading documentation regarding the GPO "Configure team site libraries to sync automatically" it can take several hours to sync this way and for the libraries to appear. Either the IAMCloud or PowerShell script routes sync the libraries fairly quickly after user logon. We've also smashed the SharePoint files limit (I know...) however everything is working fine.

Thanks for the replies. I think for the smaller shared folders I'll stick with using team libraries synchronising, but for the mail student and teacher drives, I'll link them to the SharePoint online page.

Hopefully this will finally get the message across to staff members to clear out their old files that are no longer needed (yeah right!)

I had a look at IAMCloud, and £1200 a year isn't an option, thanks for the suggestion though.
