Baackup system for small file server needed

Hi all

 

Just been asked to look at the backup system where I help out

 

The op system is Windows Smalll Business Server 2011 (yes - I know)

The server is purely used as a file sever - nothing else - no DHCP DNS active dir or anything

 

and the backup system is GrBakPro - currently - a shareware thing that is many years out of date - but has been running fine until a while ago (dunno how long - at least months) - currently survives by the bloke in charge running it manually every week or so

Also - there is another thingy that backs up stuff that has changed to Google Drive - which works fine

The backup disk is a network disk in the basement - which seems to work fine

The problem seems to be that the backup system fails when it tries to backup due to the backup disk being offline - if you try to connect to it from Windows it reconnects fine - but the backup system doesn't automatically trigger this - so it fails

 

Anyway - obviously the op system will have to be updated soon - but before that

I was wondering is anyone has a recommendation for a very simple - and cheap/free - backup system

 

All it needs to do is backup the main shared disk to a remote disk - full backup every x days - incremental every y days

 

and it needs to cope with the network disk being offline OK (which windows explorer does fine so....)

As far as I can see it just drops off due to not being used - then windows re-establishes it as soon as anyone wants it

 

also just found that a whole part of the the system is not backed up at all

 

 

There has been some mention of AWS - anyone used that - never even looked at it before myself

For personal use I have a synology which I have backing up most important stuff daily to AWS, the AWS has Encrytion which is easy to set as default compared to the Azure storage I used to back up to. I did setup a CentOS based file share which backed up to AWS a few years ago so it is possible there should be a way to do this for Windows some how.

backup seems to start itslef based on internal scheduling - I'm thinking of just having a script to delete and re-create a dud files every 5 minutes - just to keep it online until we sort out something better

Or a bat file that does dir \\server\share set to run before the backup scheduled task
