Multi-site on SWGfL) I have 2 laptops that will connect to local servers that are onsite but wont connect other servers that are at other sites or the internet. it only seems to be these 2 laptops which are effected. They have been reimaged and updated networking drivers and still no luck. They will connect to my phone without any problems. Any ideas? Are SWGfL blocking these laptops?
PlantHead Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Not a network expert and I don't know SWGfL but start with your gateways. Can you ping your internet facing router/firewall from the laptops? Are the servers and laptops on the same vlan/subnet?
newpersn Posted July 9, 2019 Author Posted July 9, 2019 Everything is on the same Vlan. I cant ping the default gateway. (i can ping it from everything else)

Can you ping the gateway over Wifi or if you physically connect a network cable to the laptop? Until you get the laptops talking to their default gateway they won't be able to talk to anything else not on the same Vlan How is the IPaddress, subnet and default gateway assigned to the laptops - DHCP? Are SWGfL blocking these laptops? try and disable ipv6 on the network adapter - had a couple computers that stopped talking to anything at one point and this fixed it for me

I can ping the default gateway from everything else. Just not these laptops. Yes DHCP and static ip address i tired. I would plug a cable in but some nice little so and so has damaged the Nic.

KevinB Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Yep all the correct config. OK, so with the correct GW set the device still can't ping said GW. You mention that they're on wifi, not wired; is it possible that there's some firewalling going on in the Wifi network to prevent them getting to the GW? I know our wifi allows us to prevent access from specific MACs to destination IPs or networks before the data even leaves the wifi network. Are there any other devices in the path from where the laptops connect to the wifi to the GW? A couple of switches perhaps? Do those switches have MAC address blocking?
themightymrp Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Can you compare the IP settings from a machine that is working to one that isn't? I'm thinking IP address, subnet and gateway address. If all still appears right then you might be looking more at some kind of device block put on your gateway? Maybe a MAC address block??

Are SWGfL blocking these laptops?I had something similar where a few could connect internally, but couldn't communicate with the gateway I fixed it initially by swapping the Wireless card on them with some spares(just make sure you have drivers handy if the lan port is dodgy. Then on some more investigation, found it was potentially a dodgy DHCP/DNS entry linked to the MAC of said card(s). Generally I got round it by deleting all related DNS/DHCP entries for the machine/MAC and renewing and hasn't happened since. If you hadn't reimaged already, I'd have suggested resetting winsock as it could be corruption. Edited July 9, 2019 by ChrisC
newpersn Posted July 17, 2019 Author Posted July 17, 2019 I looked though DHCP and DNS and couldn't see anything. Also deleted the entry for it. Changed the MAC address (Set windows 10 to use a random mac address) and reconnected and it works. So there something that is blocking the MAC address of this laptop.
