Hyper-V migrate 2008 R2 to 2019?

Is it possible to export and import a virtual machine between 2008 R2 and 2019?

 

When I export the VM and try to import into 2019 it just says "NO virtual machines found"?

 

Is there a migration path?

Not yet, but I was hoping there was a more proven migration path

 

Its a simple VM so I will give it a go.

Just backed up the VM and restored to the new 2019 server. Works well until we can upgrade the VMs to 2019 as well.

I have done it 2008R2 to 2016. When I did it I exported the VM on my 2008R2 HyperV host and then imported it into my 2016 HyperV host.

2019 may be different but it was quite straightforward to do on 2016.

No matter, Veeam sorted me out, not for the first time!

Thinking about, it was a while ago, I might have gone 2008r2 to 2012r2 to 2016. Can't remember so you may be right.

You would need to go from 2008r2 to 2012, then you can go to 2019, or use Veeam

Yep thanks all, I was suprised it wasn't possible but you are all right it can be done just in stages.

 

In the end Veeam handled it all for me, I just had to restore to the new 2019 host, boot the VM and then shutdown. Upgrade the config files by right clicking on the VM to configuration v9 and all is good!

Or for anyone without Veeam, Windows Backup also rocks when used on host with VM's. I have migrated a good few servers using this.

@TwistedHelixis. Do I just backup the VM and spin up a new vm and restore? change IP and name etc?
