We're looking to move our departments shared folder to a G Suite Team drive for each department. To me this seems as simple as getting the HOD to create a Team drive and give their department access, but has anyone gone down that route and had any issues?

Some departments are really keen on the idea - some not so much but once the first few have done it I think they will see the advantages.

This is something I'm looking at now. Still unsure if we should force everyone onto File Steam or OneDrive. I'm in two minds to push home folders to OneDrive and shared drives onto File Stream

We're sticking with all GSuite - but the file stream works ok for users who don't move around too much. Having said that, once logged into their email they're a click away from Team drives anyway

The only limitation I can see is that you can't add sharing permissions to folders on Shared/Team drives like you can with MyDrive - so a users permissions apply to the entire folder structure.

I think they are bringing out more granular permissions. For us we redesigned our entire folder structure, so where we had something like Staff Drive > Reports, in Team Drives this was now a top level Reports drive.

Technically/operationally really straightforward. If your HoDs aren't able/willing to do this, it wouldn't take you long.

Worth trying to sell the positives - it's a major change program and although you can more or less replicate what you've already got, there are a few things that won't work the same way, which as we all know will cause complaints. There are plenty of advantages though. You need some early adopters to be advocates.

Final thought: try and persuade them not to just copy everything over.

Definitely the last part! I think the HODs are planning to only transfer the newer stuff (i.e last year or so) and leave the older stuff on the network, at some point I will then archive that.

We have done this but I created the Team Drives for each department and added the relevant members. Almost everything has been migrated across from our file server. A lot of people still use the File Stream but more and more are using the browser especially those that have a Chromebook
