1903 Update via WSUS

I have set the 1903 feature update to install to a test computer group. The update downloads OK and if I log in it says:

 

'We're all set for the restart you scheduled at......'

 

(see screenshots)

 

each workstation seems to have a different date and time, despite being all turned on at the same time and identical settings, and the update/restart only seems to apply if I manually select 'restart now' in Windows Update

 

I have a number of Windows Update GPO settings, something must be missing. Has anyone successfully deployed feature updates via WSUS with no user or admin action on the workstation?

I’m finding precisely the same - if I have any luck with it I’ll let you know. My test laptop has been waiting to restart for days! There is a GPO or set the maximum wait time, but I’m not convinced of its effectiveness yet.

I’d also be interested if you can get the 1903 update applied using a startup script.

Setup.exe /auto upgrade /dynamicupdate disable /quiet

 

I can never get it to run at startup..

Mine did actually install last night, thankfully. It was logged on at the time, but I didn't click on anything else. Next test will be one left at the logon screen!

mmmm, we really want the other way round, so the update doesn't apply if someone is logged in, but does if it is just at the login screen.

 

I was thinking this should be simple. I am surprised there's not a "download update and install at next reboot" option, so the next morning when the computer is turned on the update applies...

Yup I’m hoping for a zero touch approach - other than a second reboot which runs some GP app cleanup stuff. More testing due.

I've only done this on one box (mine!) but I approved the 1903 update in the afternoon and it had installed by the next morning without any manual intervention. The only difference is that I have active hours set in GP.

Ok, had you left yourself logged in or just on the login box?

Could you please post a few screenshots of your win update GPOs? Active hours GPO, and Are you using option 4 to download and schedule?

I'll get the settings for you on monday but from what I remember I am using option 4 for scheduling. I made sure to log out and leave it on the login screen.

Here is what I have set in GPO:

 

Configure automatic updating: [b]4 - Auto download and schedule the install[/b] 
The following settings are only required and applicable if 4 is selected. 
Install during automatic maintenance [b]Enabled [/b]
Scheduled install day:  [b]0 - Every day[/b] 
Scheduled install time: [b]18:00[/b] 
If you have selected “4 – Auto download and schedule the install” for your scheduled install day and specified a schedule, you also have the option to limit updating to a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly occurrence, using the options below: 
Every week [b]Enabled [/b]
First week of the month [b]Disabled [/b]
Second week of the month [b]Disabled [/b]
Third week of the month [b]Disabled [/b]
Fourth week of the month [b]Disabled [/b]
Install updates for other Microsoft products [b]Enabled [/b]

 

Specify deadline before auto-restart for update installation [b]Enabled[/b]

 

Specify the number of days before a pending restart will automatically be executed outside of active hours:  
Quality Updates (days):  7 
Feature Updates (days): 

 

Specify the max active hours range: 
Max range:  set your desired value

 

 

the following settings are enabled:

Update Power Policy for Cart Restarts
Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications

If you use WSUS don't forget that you'll also need to add/synchronize the new Windows 10 1903 product otherwise you will not get updates for anything newer than 1809

I have made a few changes

Specify deadline before auto-restart for update installation - Enabled

Active Hours - 8:00-17:00

 

I've delayed auto shutdown to be 19:00 to allow the updates to apply.

 

Se what happens....

The computers still have not restarted and applied 1903 update. they get turned off every night but in the morning the same message is in update settings..

 

'Your organisation will restart your device at 12:26 to finish updating windows'

 

Although this time changes all the time, I looked before 12:26 today and after, and nothing has happened. Please see screenshots attached of GPO.

 

Any advice most gratefully received, I need to end this story really..
