Server - System Board Power Fluctuation... Worry or Not?

Just looking through the event logs for our server and came across this:

They are both showing as detected, but shouldn't PSU also show as 0.1A (or is that just sitting idle as the redundancy)?

First time I've seen it so not entirely sure what it really means, but looks like it peaked at the time the event was logged:

Anything I can easily check, or just keep an eye on it (maybe just a spike)?

If there was a spike would your UPS not smooth it?

 

I would hope so... unless it came from the UPS... (they are very old unmonitored APC 1000 boxes), but no warning LEDs are on and they are supposed to have surge/spike protection. :confused:

 

Thing is the figures seem like I should have a fried server this morning seeing as the System Board Pwr Consumption figures read:

 

Reading: 98W (334BTU/hr)

Warning Threshold: 896W (3058 BTU/hr)

Failure Threshold: 980W (3345 BTU/hr)

 

and the spike was : 64613W (220524 BTU/hr) :eek:

There is no way that your server drew a fault current of 1176A (from the first screenshot) or over 6000A (from the second) without you seeing some sort of other effects of that - exploded UPS, burnt out cables, tripped electrical supply. That would almost certainly have been enough to take out the main fuse on the school electrical supply.

 

My money would be on a faulty reading from the sensor.

 

Edit: backed up by it showing a 98W power consumption, but 0.1A current - that doesn't equate. 98W at 240V is 0.41A, or 0.1A at 240V is only 24W.

I'm loving your 64 KW server - are you working in google's data center?

 

Yes, I am secretly running Google from my server room. :cool:

 

Let's face it, have to do something to supplement the low ICT tech wage! :p

 

Just hope the Business Manager doesn't look too closely at this month's electricity bill... :eek:

Yes agree with others, no way your server could draw 64KW, if it did there would probably be a 1 meter deep hole where your server rack used to be!

 

Must just be dodgy sensors of some kind.
