SFP+ Switch Recommendation

I need to procure a switch with at least 5 SFP+ ports to run a stand alone cluster network but can't seem to find anything that's not super expensive (£4k+).

All our switches are HPE/Aruba but we don't have to stick with that for this. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you, thats very helpful. I've heard of Ubiquiti Networks but never used them.

We use that switch as our aggregation switch here - works flawlessly.

 

Note, you'll need a unifi controller if you want unifi switches. You can either do this in software on a machine, or get one of their "Cloud Key" devices.

Ah right so you get sucked into a subscription based software model, I guess thats how they can do the hardware so cheap.

No, nothing at all like that, you can run the controllers free on your own setup with no licensing EVER, or use cloud key which does obviously have a small cost.

But for this purpose, the switch will be stand alone, not connected to the network in any way, just switching a secondary cluster network between 5 hosts so I won't be able to manage it or connect it to any kind of controller or server. Can they work like that?

No. The manager can run on ANY machine though, windows or linux, as long as it's capable of running a webserver if it isn't already and uses next to no resources. Would take nothing to be able to connect at least one device to it for this purpose.

Or you could just buy the Ubiquiti Edge series and save on the controller.

Ubiquiti SFP models work in our HP switches without issue. Might be worth trying them as there a lot cheaper, even if its just to test them.

The Edge series are more of a traditional switch - not web managed/cloudy type. So CLI managed etc...

Are you wanting to make use of any of the managed features? If not and it's just to act as a switch between hosts without vLANs in the mix etc then the Unifi switch will do that out of the box without management.

Yes that should be all thats needed. No VLANs, no config at all should really be needed.

Then that will work - the switch acts as a dumb one just passing data without the controller being needed at all.
