Backing Up Hyper-V?

Hi all - very very new to Hyper V. Just getting to grips with a few bits, now proper keen on having it backing up.

 

Have one test VM on it now, buzzing away happily.

 

I'm not really looking to back up the VMs themselves, more just the disks. I'll also do file-level backups of the VMs. In the event of losing a VM, the disk could be restored and the VM settings copied out of a spreadsheet when making a replacement VM.

 

Anyone have any walkthroughs of doing so?

Veeam Free edition worth a try. You should be able to schedule jobs via PowerShell, it is a bit of a faf or get a paid for license. The features possible of Veeam beat any product out there in my opinion but only if you are prepared to pay for them. Edited June 4, 2019 by Davit2005

I'd probably use windows backup to take a backup of the host although to be honest getting the host setup with Hypver-V from scratch is pretty easy, Take a look at Altaro(I use this for our hosts) or Veeam as they both offer free versions for 1/2 vm's

You could also look at setting up a VM server to replicate the virtual servers (good for backup and disaster recovery)

Just use Veeam then you don't have to worry about backups ever again.

We juse Veeam and then Acronis as supplemental

Use VEEAM with full recovery option, you can restore any files or whole machines.

We use Altaro and have never had any issues, there's a free version which will back up 2 vms
