Hi Guys,

I apologise if this is in the wrong thread. I have just taken over a site that has SCCM. They have updates for Windows 10 Configured as it should be, however they use Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016, which has never been updated. I am a newbie myself to SCCM, and this got me thinking.

I normally create computer collections for Windows Updates, I have various ones for Windows Server, Windows 7 and Windows 7 using a WMI query for the Windows NT version, example for Windows 10 I believe mine is Windows NT Workstation 10.0.

How can I achieve this for Office 2016? Now, all machines get Office 2016 deployed to them when a machine is built via SCCM, could I maybe create a collection for Office 2016 and deploy the updates within SCCM to that collection?

Maybe I am missing something here, like I said I am new to SCCM so I will look forward to the replies.

Best regards

James

I always try to stick to one type of Office across the site, with the only exception being testing a newer version on selected clients. This allows me to create a new collection that contains all the workstations called 'Software Updates | Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus'. I then target the updates/ADR to that collection. The clients being used for testing will still download the updates from SCCM, but they won't be applied because there's no product to install them against. It'll just appear as a failed install in Software Centre on the client. Though the client will keep trying to reinstall that update each time it's update evaluation cycle runs. Not much of an issue, especially as testing won't be for that long in the grand scheme of things. When it comes to deploying that new version of office, I'd create two new collections, one for deploying the install of Office to and another for deploying the updates to, like Office 2016's update collection.

I hope that makes sense.

Your on the right track.

I am assuming you have already checked within the Software Update Point Component Properties > Products tab that Office 2016 is selected to download updates.

Create a collection for the updates and add all your clients into it. Download the Office 2016 updates, create a Software Update Group for them and then create a deployment for the group to the collection you created, just like you would with Windows 10 or Windows 7.

SCCM will sort out if the client needs the update or not and it will be installed to the schedule you specified.
