Jcx500 Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Hi, Anyone have there cctv pc hooked up to a large display, we have ours and it is a bit slow with 60+ channels and keeps crashing, Guessing i need a more powerful Gpu , especially with it being a 4k Screen.
Rob_D Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 We've got an old laptop driving the "cctv screen" in the site office. But it's only running in HD with 18 channels. Do you have the camera's tiled? If so see if only showing one makes a difference to the performance. If not then it's more likely to be RAM or CUP that's slowing things down. Also try dropping the resolution, if that clears things up then, yeah a new graphics card is in order. 1
synaesthesia Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 For any PC running CCTV as it's primary job you'll have to MASSIVELY overspec; software overheads are generally too high and you'll find most Quadro's etc will still be struggling despite a corei7 and 16gb of ram at the backend; compare that to dedicate NVR hardware which would fit in your wallet if it were not for the hard drives which would do it without batting an eyelid or even needing any special cooling... Not sure what the biggest bottleneck is though, if it's software or hardware in the case of PCs - so much of the software we've seen is so generally poorly performing it's hard to judge. 3
mavhc Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 What OS is it running? Load up the system monitor, check cpu, ram, drive queues, gpu usage. Is it decoding h264 streams? in hw or software?

Uber22 Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 It's a network video recorder, price ranges on brand. before I brought NVR we had a server that did the recording and it was quite powerful but it was allways crashing so I moved to NVR. I can really complain about the software we have the box in our off with a nice large screen and if anyone else wants access they use the web login with limited user

Ours for example are Hikvision 32 channel devices with 12TB of storage. We've a pair of them running near 40 cameras at HD or better resolution 15fps, constant record. We don't touch that storage and it gives us near enough 3 months of footage across the board. Pretty much any PC based software you'll be lucky to get a couple of weeks with just a few cameras. The boxes are awesome, just work etc. The interface on the boxes is great to use for playback, live viewing etc, but easy grabbing of footage to USB is diabolical, and the ivms software is clunkier than a hospital visit after falling into a pit of deathly lego bricks.

Poor compression methods being used, god knows what overheads etc. A lot of it could be tweaked with enough work but using off the shelf programs such as motioneye/motioneyeOS, ispy, zoneminder etc and default settings they're all a bit rubbish. No doubt someone with good knowhow can tweak them but I've yet to find anything suitable when googling around for my home motioneyeOS setup. Only 2 cameras at HD, a core i5/6gb RAM/1TB storage setup but I can only keep 3 days retention. 1
FishCustard Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Yeah, we have the same issue with the Hikvision software. Our reception monitoring PC locks up every so often, even on a current-gen i5 with 8 GB RAM and an SSD. I've described the iVMS software as being written by drunk lemurs in the past - a judgement I fully stand by! I believe it has a memory leak somewhere - even figuring out where wouldn't help as I couldn't fix it! I'm still figuring out a decent way to do web monitoring - having to work around the fact that the easy-to-consume MJPEG streams are single-view only.

synaesthesia Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Yup, motioneye does hardware encoding on mine, still doesn't help file sizes or performance though. Certainly very RAM hungry too, 4GB was a dog for just the 2 cams
