[1809, ou] Disable Right Click On Start Button

Hi All,

How does one go about disabling the menu from appearing when you right click on the start button on windows 10 1809, we've disabled context menus via gpo, put a reg file that was meant to do the same job however had no avail with it, anyone managed to do this ?

I couldn’t remove it, but removing entries in the menu to make it more useful and less distracting is straightforward. Nice to still be able to access File Explorer and the shut down options there.

The items in this context menu are normal shortcuts located in %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\WinX they are within the three sub folders which make up the separated categories in the context menu. You can delete / hide them if needed. I don't bother as setting other GPOs correctly means students can't access anything interesting from there any way.

 

Removing them all seems to disable the menu.

The shortcuts get copied into the users profile. Setting file permissions allows per shortcut availability.

You can use GPP to delete them from their profiles too (or create just the ones you want in a mandatory profile).

Group Policy - Users - Preferences - Folders:

 

Our staff GPO only hides Group 3 so they see Settings, File Explorer etc as well.

We didn't manage to hide them, the menu still appears when right clicking so had to settle for them just throwing an error when clicked

I've managed it by hiding the following folders using GPP, instead of deleting them (sure I originally got it from somewhere on here).

 

the GPO: User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Folders

 

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group1

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group2

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX\Group3

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX

 

Set the action of all items to 'Update' and also check the hidden box for them all.

 

When a student right clicks the start menu, nothing happens.

Just found this page, works perfectly, signed up to say thanks. There is a space after "WinX " you need to remove that or it will not work.
