Hmm, I seem to be stuck in the usual MS licensing loop again!

We have OVS-ES based on our FTE count, which I thought covered RDS for this - based on searches and previous threads on here. However a recent enquiry to VLSC support regarding this and they say we didn't purchase it

So am I wrong in thinking I can use our OVS-ES agreement number to activate RDS on a server? We have the standard Client/CAL/Office pack

I don't believe your core CAL pack includes RDS licences. You need to purchase these separately. Then a normal windows server licence covers the server itself (Which you might already have in our OVS-ES agreement if you purchase that.

However as always, check with your reseller. You need to study for thousands of years to become an expert in Microsoft Licensing, then they change it.

RDS CALs are an additional license under OVS-ES 100%. We have been buying them for years. Definitely not included in either the Core or Enterprise CAL packs.

this is what they show up in my VLSC as: our staff count is 99

Servers Windows Remote Desktop Services - User CAL 2019 99 0 99

Servers Windows Remote Desktop Services External Connector 2019 1 0 1

That makes sense, you can read 10 articles on MS licensing and come away with 20 different answers! I'll ask our reseller about the cost of these - anyone know what the typical cost is for an RDS CAL?

Don't take it as gospel, but I think they were about £4-5 each last time we paid. Though, with all the price rises they've had lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they've gone up.

My apologies for resurrecting this but I'm trying to get the correct part number for the RDS Cals, I've been quoted £28 each for 6VC-03728 Microsoft®WinRmtDsktpSvcsCAL 2019 Sngl Academic OLP 1License NoLevel UsrCAL. Can anyone give me a cheaper part number if possible?

It depends on how you're wanting to licence RDS - can be done based on FTE count or individually. There's a point where the price of the individual ones makes it cheaper to base on FTE count.

Also depends on what level agreement you have ie level E or level F
