Sharepoint online backup

Hi -

 

I'm starting to look into migrating our shared areas to sharepoint online - However, one of the biggest things that worries me is Backup. I'm aware that deleted items get dumped into a recycle bin that we can pull back from, but that's only for 30 days. Beyond that we're stuck. I'm sure we've all had it where people remember 6/12 months down the line that the file they deleted they urgently need...

 

Also from what I've read if a sharepoint library gets ransomwared, Microsoft can restore it but it's the entire library or you've got to sit and restore each file seperately (ugh) & of course you're relying on Microsoft to do this in good time.

 

So my question is really - Has anyone gone down this route & if so, are they backing up their document libraries themselves? I looked at Veeam 365 backup (as I love veeam!) but the price is just nuts - Around £12per year per user who has access to a sharepoint library which naturally is a bit of a non starter if decide to move the student shared areas to sharepoint overtime.

You can configure retention policies to keep data for x amount of years.

For all my G Suite schools I use Spanning backup but they do an Office 365 version - https://spanning.com/

Randomly looking at the same thing at the moment. Getting costs for 3 companies currently who are druva, skykick and barracuda cloud. Had one price back for barracuda cloud to cloud covering exchange, sharepoint and onedrive which cost under £7 per user.

Seems like you have different levels of recycle bins...

 

I'm considering using Veeam for Staff/staff shared areas (So limiting the license cost down to just the 100ish staff) and then just using retention policies for students. I need to keep reading tho before going further

It was Per year. Just had costings from Druva, who are recommended by Nasa.

Makes sense why the cost was so astronomical.
