Morning all!

There is one other thread running on this exact topic, but it seems to have gone quiet. Essentially, we've received a message from ParentPay stating that TLS 1.0 will be no longer supported from October 2018 onwards. I contacted the number mentioned in the email for further confirmation, which directed me to NRS/Civica technical support.

The support representative has suggested that we replace our entire cashless catering system at a cost of approximately £10,000! Granted, the system is almost 10 years old, uses 'Version 2' of Nationwide's till software and runs on an operating system that is some variant of Windows XP mobile. However the till system works really well and as usual, there is a shortage of cash to replace old hardware that continues to work.

Another cashing catering company mentioned that this could be negated by simply upgrading the 'backroom server/computer' to Windows 10. Is that correct? Otherwise, I guess we may have to bite the bullet.

I also manage another secondary school, which has a 3 year old NRS cashless catering system running 'Version 6'. I imagine that this site could upgrade to Sync2 for c.£300 to allow future connections via TLS 1.2?

If anyone has any information regarding the above, it would be hugely appreciated!

Yep we had this issue as well recently, Tucassi changed to TLS 1.3 without telling anyone last summer and it broke all the Windows 2008 server installs overnight. That was fun.

There is actually a way to get windows 2008 to install the modern certificates but we gave up and built a new server in the end.

Our tills were upgraded by cunninghams for about 1.5k each.

Yep - we are in the same boat - Tills are running Win XP and the cashless server (well not a server, a Win7 dekstop running the apps)

I've had a couple of emails and then nothing - so I have emailed and said if they fail to get in touch by the end of the week then they can say goodbye as I will be looking at other providers.

If your running Windows XP clients then it's probably time to upgrade the whole system anyway otherwise all you are going to get in the future is more and more problems like this?

We had XP clients and been updated to Windows 10. Installed in 2014 so tills aren't that old. They even had SSDs already! Not that that stopped NRS 'upgrading' them to a 120GB SSD. The same size as they already had. Luckily they left the old ones so I have two more for stock now.

Has anyone done the move from NRS V2/V3 up to V6 or V8?

We have been offered this but at the cost of losing all the biometric data in the system. Surely that's a miss understanding?

What till os is used for the newer version 6 or 8, could anyone confirm?

Ours is V6, might be able to find exact number at work tomorrow.

There was talk of a web interface as well a bit ago.

@robk ... We're currently using NRS V2, but Civica/NRS have suggested we replace our entire system. @mdrabble ... Same! The cashless server/biometric store is a Windows 7 desktop.

I've inquired with Civica/NRS to see whether our existing tills can be upgraded at a lower cost than replacing the entire system. If not, then we will have to bite the bullet and replace the lot, which may not be a bad thing. However I believe the cashless catering system at the other school I manage is approximately 3-4 years old. As such, I reckon the tills could either be upgraded to Windows 10/Version 8, or we pay for the Sync2 upgrade. £300 is more manageable than £10,000!

@azureusnation ... How old were your tills? What software version were you running previously to the upgrade? If we can just upgrade the till hard drives to SSD/Win 10/Version 8, that'll be a huge saving for us.

Civica forwarded me an email apparently sent to the school in March.

Til Models 6910 - need replacing

Til models SP800 & SP820 require software upgrades

Til Models SP850 - no action required as run Win10

Sorry ive only just gotten back. Been busy at work being the only tech across 4 schools at the moment.

They were running windows xp embedded. I don't know the version of the NRS software but it is one of the older ones from around 2013.

Keep persisting and complaining but when I and my CFO questioned them about it, it is just a ploy to get everyone on to the 'Civica' platform.

Just had a quote from Civica to update tills (basically replace with SSD incorporated Windows 10 - 32bit)

Good job I was sat down....... £159.00 per till!!!!

I have emailed them back to ask - A) why 32bit edition and B) why do much as the installation is listed as a separate item!

Not even mentioning the other items they listed!!

Had to check the date just incase they sent it on 1st April!!!

I've seen them cheap, but not that low! Do you mind sharing where from - PM if needed - we don't want them selling out :)

I told our finance person I could get SSD drives for approx £16 each and then install Windows myself - she was shocked at the cost as well!

Googling the model number of the till it has an atom processor which should supposed 64bit OS.

Ideally need to jump on one of the tolls to check spec etc.

Only reason I can think they are only installing 32bit OS is for driver support.

Anyone got an SP800 till which has been upgraded to Win10 able to confirm if they support 64bit Win 10

Why a till is running a desktop OS is the first question

Interestingly, the till are running Windows Embeded POSReady 2009 (Which I assume is some kind of variation of Windows XP, as the boot splash screen shows Windows XP)

So I am wondering if there is a Windows 10 equivalent?

So I emailed NRS/Civica to ask the following questions:

1. Current SP800 tils, do these not support 64bit Windows 10?

2. Are the current SP800 tils not compatible with Civica Version 8?

These are their replies.

1. Unfortunately not, the SSD that replaces the current one will be Windows 10 32bit as the SP800 model does not support 64bit.

2. The SP800 models are not compatible with Civica Cashless version 8 because v8 was built to a 64bit specification which cannot be handled by the 32bit SP800 model machines.

So I checked the CPU and it is an Atom D525 -1.80Ghz

Ran a utility called Securable and it confirms the CPU will run 64bit - and the specs from Microsoft state a CPU 1Ghz or faster

Partners (who make the SP-800) have Win7/Win8 64 bit drivers available......

So before I go back to Civica and ask them why they think the till wont support a 64 bit OS - can someone give me a sanity check to make sure that I'm not missing anything!

Cheers

I've emailed Civica to clarify which parts of the SP800 tills don't support Windows 10 - 64 bit as I have a till running Windows 10, 64 bit with with the touch screen and various bio metric/pin entry readers.

The only things I cannot test is the connection to the NRS system - unless anyone has instructions on how to add tills to the NRS system :-D

Does anyone know what Sync2 actually is? Is it on all of the tills or just the desktop/server that runs the Sync software? Our desktop/server has Sync software which talks to ParentPay to pull down the diners balances and that is on version 3.7 named SyncUNC so hopefully therefore is already on this Sync2 perhaps?

They are trying to get thousands out of us so any help regarding this would be useful. I love the way they are scare mongering people into updating from XP due to cryptolocker quotes from the NHS and engadget but has anyone seen them ever do an update on Windows XP anyway or even install antivirus!

Cheers
