[1809, ou] First logon black screen after imaging

Strange issue - not a major problem for us just wondering if anyone else is seeing this behaviour and has a fix.

The first time we logon to a machine after imaging it with SCCM, we either get stuck on preparing Windows and the spinning wheel, or go to a black desktop and nothing happens - no explorer loads.

CTRL - ALT - DELETE to log off and then log back in. All is fine.

 

Like I say only happening on the first logon after imaging...

I've been having this with 1809 LTSC deployed from WDS. If I leave it for a few minutes it will log in.

 

Only does this for one or two users however.

Do you modify the unattend.xml to add the reg key below?

 

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout /d 0

 

We added this key as it was recommended to speed up login times, works great on computers with SSDs but no so good with a HDD. It skips the preparing windows screen and takes you straight to the Desktop.

 

For new logons, with an SSD we noticed sometimes the taskbar wasn't populated or the Start menu didn't respond. With HDDs the user would get a black screen for a few mins, sometimes up to 8 mins (another issue).

 

We've removed the reg key now, logon isn't any quicker but instead of a black screen user see preparing windows and complain less.

First logon for user X in any machine is dog sh*t slow. On SSD it’s better but still not great, on NVMe is bearable but still poor.

 

As for the black screen it’s a common issue and all you can do is wait. On desktop OS it’s a lottery, on Server 16 and 19 for RDS it’s 100% guaranteed.

 

In short - Ever since day 1 of Windows 8 first logon to a PC for a user is cr*p and it’s only got worse through 10, you have AppX environment to thank for that. In lab environments (Eg. Schools) it’s a killer and all you can do is shrug shoulders and let it do its thing.

 

I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit looking into slow first logon/black first logon since Windows 8 and the only thing that proves any worth is faster drives, the NVMe’s to me personally make it reasonable, (30 secs max) SSD’s seem slow to me now (1 min max).

 

Subsequent logons of course are pretty instant (10 secs max except from cold boot).

Thanks everyone we have been using Windows 10 for years and not seen this before.

 

90% of our machines are SSD based and login times are generally acceptable / good for us. We are happy with 1 min - 1 min 30 seconds on first login and then 20 seconds subsequent. considering most of our hardware is 3/4gen i3 or i5. Just wondered if this was a common issue on 1809 as haven’t had it with any of the other previous versions back to 1511.

 

I’m tempted to leave it as is and not try the Rey key - as it’s only the first logon for the very first user after imaging at the moment. After that everything eAnd not every time or devices some work fine. Strange!

I'd try reverting your snapshot and sysprepping again. I've done a few syspreps on an 1809 image here (LTSC though) and have had varying results when booted. GP's not picking up, having to rejoin the domain to connect to a DC... and the black screen!.. all seems random.
