Sheridan Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 It seems that Riverbed/Xirrus have decided to push education customers away now as well. A renewal figure of £7k+ for 12 months for our 50 APs is an absolute mickey take especially as it doesn't include any hardware, so I can only assume they don't want our custom. Has anyone else had stupidly expensive license quotes from them? Looks like I'll be a Unifi customer soon enough then.
BKGarry Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 I didn't get it from them, but I did have a stupid cost of just software support cost for controller support from Meru. I replaced 50 meru APs with 40 Unifi Aps for just over 5k. Did it all myself as well, so if you need any pointers, just give me a shout. 1

I've just done a fag packet calculation and for £7k I can renew all 50 APs, and add another 20! - looks like Meru/Xirrus etc are just pricing to ditch Edu customers. We don't even have a controller - just cloud managed APs, so the price is ridiculous

We don't even have a controller - just cloud managed APs, so the price is ridiculous Yeah stuff that. I would say that the "in wall" APs from meru are very nice. I used them in some office spaces where there was not overhead cabling. they fitted into a standard 1 gang backbox (i popped the CATs port out and just used a 0.5m cable to go into the AP). Then on the bottom of the AP is 2 ehternet ports, which one is POE so people didn't lose IP phones. The software controller is good (just make sure disable auto java updating on windows for it)
Sheridan Posted March 21, 2019 Author Posted March 21, 2019 Even basic pricing is showing around £370 for a 5 pack of their AC Pro's - way better! The only thing I'm not sure about is we use Radius (Window server) to authenticate devices/users, and also have a guest system that uses vouchers and both are on different VLANS. The main VLAN is on the main network and the guest is straight out to our Smoothwall. From the brief look I've had at Unifi it seems to cover all this, but if there's any weirdness I know a lot of people have successfully moved to Unifi like yourself.
BKGarry Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Nope, done all of it. Radius was fine, just have to add each ap as a device. And use wildcard for the ssid name. We have a separate guest network as well with the vouchers.
BKGarry Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 To also add, I was able to change the APs a few at a time and run both next to one and other with roaming totally fine. The phone app is really good as you can put an AP up. Adopt it and name it right there and then.
