KoolTech Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Hi, I have been asked to look into doing a management course and was suggested the NPQML by my line manager. I am an IT Manager in a Trust of 2 large primary schools in Northumberland with a team of 3 currently. Would this course be suitable or is it mainly aimed at people who do some teaching as well? Are there any courses similar people have done and could recommend? Cheers,
TechMonkey Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 (edited) I would have said not as it is a very school, curriculum based course. Take a look at the GOV page about it and it even says things like "teaching and curriculum excellence". Maybe they said "like" as an example they knew of, wandering if there is something similar in the IT world? I have been looking and not found anything except expensive courses that I have no idea if they add value. There are orgs like the Charted Management Institute (CMI) that offer qualifications, through learning providers, but they normally work with an employer so are looking for groups of 5 minimum, costs are about £1500 per person. OU might be a possibility but even more expensive. They do BA (Honours) Business Management (Leadership Practice) but again, cost is going to be a massive factor here (£17k worth). Basically, if you find something please report back as I would be interested, personally and in supporting my team. Edited March 14, 2019 by TechMonkey Wrong course
SpuffMonkey Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Years ago I did an NVQ Level 5 in Management and Leadership (I worked for a firm putting them in place) - pretty good I thought at the time
FishCustard Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 The NPQ-something (NPQH, NPQSL, etc.) are for curriculum leaders, and would be mostly pointless for a IT/admin leader. I'd also be interested in anything you find!
rich_tech Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 (edited) My place seems to put people through ILM based stuff, their actual site is down at the moment, but theres lots of people training out ILM based courses on a wide field of leadership and management https://www.qa.com/training-courses/leadership-and-management/institute-of-leadership-and-management-ilm Edited March 14, 2019 by rich_tech 2
Reboot_IT Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 I did Level 3 ILM a few years ago as I started my first role as a leader/manager and found it worthwhile. 1
