SIMS.net + Domain Trusts

Hi all,

 

I'm faced with a situation that SIMS.net is hosted in a local domain called abc.com and we're in the process of deploying a new MAT wide domain, xyz.com

 

Can I create a Trust between the abc.com and xyz.com domains, so workstations newly imaged on xyz.com can access SIMS.net on abc.com?

 

Is this the recommended method, or are there better methods?

 

Eventually a new VM could be created natively on xyz.com to host SIMS.net but in the meantime, imaging workstations is the priority.

 

Thereafter would workstations need SIMS.net re-installing after it was migrated to xyz.com? The newly created SIMS server would maintain its existing IP configuration, but the hostname would most likely change.

SIMS allows you to give users a selection box for the domain, using the connect.ini configuration options. This works across a trust - we used to do so.

 

You won’t need to reinstall it - just change connect.ini on each workstation (GPP?) or the central connect.ini if you redirect them.

Thank you, but it's not a selection box I require; just to make sure SIMS operates over a domain trust.

I see - there won't be any choice needed. I guess you're using trusted logons, so the users don't have separate SIMS login details? Once the trust is setup, just set the login domain on the account in SIMS. It'll pick this up across the trust.

I should have clarified - users have standalone SIMS logon accounts to their AD logon.

That'll be fine then. You should be able to deploy SIMS across the trust with SOLUS3 as usual. Mostly, it'll just work, but get back if you have any issues in particular.

You will only have issues with staff who log in to different domains on different workstations. E.g. if room Maths 1 has a workstation on the old domain and Teacher 1 logs in to the machine as old\teacher1, they then for the next lesson go to room Maths 2 and log in to the new domain as new\teacher1, you will have an issue as you can only specify one domain\username combination per SIMS user.
