MrBitey Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Hello there, I'm hoping for a bit of advice re URL forwarding my school's new website. We own the domain rudyardkiplingprimary.co.uk and I have used the tools at DomainDiscout 24 to point this at our new website. At the moment, http://rudyardkiplingprimary.co.uk and http://www.rudyardkiplingprimary.co.uk work just fine and send users to the new site (created with the new version of Google Sites) However, when one does a search for our school on Google or Bing, the main result points to the url https://rudyardkiplingprimary.co.uk but that goes nowhere. Just reports that the domain took too long to respond. I set up the redirects on Friday morning. Do I just need to wait a bit longer for this one to filter through or is there something else I need to do? Thanks very much in advance!

I'm not at an expert with DNS by any means, but when I changed ours from our old to new domain although it went live within a few hours - I noticed it took about a week for the DNS to propagate all the changes. Sometimes at work/home I'd get the new page/domain name, sometimes I'd get the old site/domain name and a few times I got nothing at all. Give it a couple more days at least. 1
nottsure Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 (edited) I noticed that you have https on one and not on the working links. You can submit change requests to google / bing or see if the DNS host can add a redirect from https to http which does redirect Edited March 3, 2019 by nottsure 2
willtech Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 (edited) Most domain re-director sites can only redirect non-HTTPS requests. Possibly you may need to contact their support to see what your options are with them. Have you tried mapping the domain in google ? https://support.google.com/a/answer/7392423?hl=en but you might have the same issue. Google tend to prefer https/SSL results. The thing is as well is when you redirect from one domain to another both HTTPS and the domain that you are coming from is not in the SSL Certificate your browser will cause a SSL error as the domain is not in the SSL certificate. Interesting ideas so far. I think first thing to do is give it a few more days and explain to 'The Powers That Be' that some dns stuff takes a while to propogate (when they complain that the link doesn't work when they search for our site). Then it will be a case of either getting Google et al to alter the URL they link to and/or chatting with tech support at DomainDiscount24. 1

Given it redirects to the sites.google.com url I guess not. https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2017/08/map-your-site-to-custom-url-in-new-sites.html Google uses Lets Encrypt to automatically make a certificate for you, "may take up to 24 hours" https://support.google.com/a/answer/7392423?hl=en https://admin.google.com/AdminHome?fral=1#AppDetails:service=Sites&flyout=address should show, under Web Address Mapping, url format New. Currently I have "Missing Certificate", let's see if it updates... 5mins later: it updated, works great, no more url changes Edited March 3, 2019 by mavhc 1
MrBitey Posted March 3, 2019 Author Posted March 3, 2019 Thanks mavhc It is a new site, yes. I haven't set the CNAME redirection. I just used their DomainDiscount24's 'assistant. So, if I add a CNAME for http://www.rudyardkiplingprimary.co.uk what would I just put the address of the Google site? I have tried putting this inhttps://sites.google.com/rkps.me/home but I am told it's an 'invalid hostname'. Outside of my comfort zone with this stuff...
mavhc Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Ah, you're using your web hosting to do 301 redirects. Don't do that, use DNS CNAME to redirect www. https for the naked domain, without the www is harder. https://support.google.com/a/answer/2518373 works for http, but not sure about https, can you 301 redirect to https://domain.name ? 1
