I can't see why it shouldn't be open to the whole grid. Picture this scenario. Bahrain Grand Prix with 3 laps to go. Everyone 11th and under pits for a new set of the softest compound available. The leaders catch the rest of the pack and now have to try and get past 10 cars under blue flags while they are all trying to push for a fast lap. Would cause complete chaos in my view. If its just the top 10 its a risk = reward scenario which I absolutely love.
jmak Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 I reckon there are enough points available to make teams and drivers care - it could be championship deciding. However the point is just to try and keep the TV audience watching until the end of the race, hence maximise ad revenue... The calculation will be very complicated because the engines essentially don't last long enough - Mercedes definitely took engine and gearbox penalties last year. So will they go for a big lap for one extra point, but risk having to take an extra engine.... Interesting, but a bit contrived IMO

Yup - noticed it last year - we were told for years that McLaren were great and had a wonderful chassis that was being held back by a rubbish engine Then the engine moves and the new team seems fine with it Hmmm
tg12 Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 The “point for fastest lap but only if you’re in the top 10” comes from Formula E. For the first two seasons, everyone was eligible. However, in the last race of season 2 (I was there to witness this), the two title contenders (tied for points at the start of the race) crashed at turn 1. They limped back to the pits, jumped into their second cars and kept going in and out of the pits trying to set the fastest lap. So you had this farcical situation where the two drivers leading the championship were both messing around in last and second to last places trying to a) get the fastest lap and b) block the other one from getting fastest lap
