johncollins Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 I am a teacher considering moving into a Data Management / SIMS type of role. I have used the software in school obviously, but how can I download a (local) copy of SIMS (presumably with test pupil data) to learn more about how to use it? Also, is there any other particular area / software that you see expanding in the next few years? (i.e something else I could look at?)
cw222 Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 You won't be able to have a local copy of SIMS with test data for personal training. This is due to the way that Capita licences the software. Most people will "learn on the job" as someone their school has delegated SIMS access to. You can then have access to the Capita My account Knowledge base. I know SIMS offers some training courses on "non school delegates" (link below). https://www.capita-sims.co.uk/sites/default/files/2017-10/SIMS_working_in_school.pdf If you are friendly with the IT staff/ Data Manager at your school, they may be able to give you an overview.
matt40k Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 I know David Pott does some beginners training - https://schoolanalytics.teachable.com/p/sims-for-beginners
Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Ask your current school's SIMS support, we put on training and all our schools can send up to 2 delegates to any of our courses as part of the SLA, yours may do something similar.

Is your interest more around the Data Analytics and assessment than the administration requirements such as attendance registers, behaviour recording, timetables, census submissions etc. If so, it might make sense to look beyond just SIMS.

I was promised SIMs training in one role as IT Tech for 5x years. It never materialised during those 5x years. We had no choice but to "learn on the job" even for the techie issues. There was a data manager who did all the data stuff though.
dapaulio Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 (edited) We use schools ict. Leeds based company who provide training at cost. https://www.schoolicts.co.uk/training-courses-2-2/ North Yorkshire county council have a similar web address so don’t confuse the two if you google it Personally being in it support I have gained a lot of on the job experience with sims. Maybe your it tech may help you if he is a nice as I am [emoji4] Edited February 19, 2019 by dapaulio
