[1803, au] Redirected start menu randomly not working

So, a weird thing happened last week...

 

loads of students got failed folder redirection and access to home drives - some students got asked for credentials every time they clicked a redirected something, some of those credential boxes said something like 'password expired' on them, some just got an unable to access message like the item didn't exist, not just that access was denied.

 

I restarted all the machines involved and access to user folders and drives has all come back fine.

 

As far as I'm aware nothing has changed server side - the server hasn't been restarted since christmas - it's due to be restarted next week for updates.

 

What has not come back reliably is start menu redirection... The start menu literally just shows modern apps. I don't get it. There are no errors in GPresult, a session is opened to the server from the user to the start menu folder, the contents of the folder are copied to the users local start menu location, but it just doesn't get displayed - I can check this by changing the contents of the start menu and logging off and on again and watching the folder contents change. It's not replicable with any certainty which doesn't help tying it down. the ICT teacher reported 2 days of lessons where it was fine, and all other lessons at least 1 machine didn't display it. If the user logs off and back on, sometimes the result is the same, sometimes it fixes it.

 

Anyone got any ideas?
