Just in the process of ordering a new server and this time I want to setup the drives using RAID 10 + 1 hot spare.

DELL have come back with a quote with 6x 600GB 10K SAS Drives, but am I correct that I would need one more drive to have a hot spare, as raid 10 uses pairs of drives in a mirror, or can RAID 10 be setup using 5 drives?

RAID 10 needs even number plus the hot spare. 4 is the sweet spot it seems, between reliability and redundancy. Make sure that you get the notifications for drive failure set up properly - if you have a hot spare but aren’t notified when it’s drafted in, you’re not that much better off!

Yes if you have 6 drives you need 1 x extra for hotspare, or you can use 4 x drives in the raid 10 and have 2 drives as hot spares. you cant have an odd number of drives in raid 10 as mentioned above.
