ReverentCreature Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I am testing OneDrive which runs in the taskbar tray and is configured through group policy. Is it possible to set the OneDrive folder to be the root of the home folders? So in our case that would be drive (N: ) which will encompass Desktop, Documents, Pictures etc... We want to get all staff using Onedrive and don't want some work scattered on Office 365 and other files scattered on the server. It would be good to have them one and the same. "Set up protection of important folders" feature in OneDrive only work if they path to the (C: ) drive which doesn't happen on a domain like ours. TIA
jezi55 Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 We are currently using a 3rd party tool called OneDrive connect supplied by DMS Systems. More information can be found here: Design and Management Systems
sted Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 there is a onedrive gpo for it that im looking at BUT HAVE NOT TESTED yet but heres the link to what ive been looking at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/redirect-known-folders
synaesthesia Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Is that wise bearing in mind that's where appdata sits?
sted Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 right i got it working on my test setup this morning. by known folders it JUST means document/pictures/desktop so appdata/music/downloads etc are not migrated (i suspect you could gpp/reg hack them across though but not sure a want to try) seems to work well i dumped rando files onto the test users desktop via chrome and they appeared almost instantaneously on the laptops desktop
psydii Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Do not migrate AppData into OneDrive - AppData gets hammered and is a bad candidate for syncing, you will end up with many duplicate files as changes get confused between machines. Do not migrate Downloads into OneDrive - Every file you download will be uploaded. Fine if you have a big fat symmetrical pipe to the internet. A total disaster if its a teacher laptop being used on a home broadband line. You can use the SharePoint Migration tool to copy all your homefolders up to Office365, and have it run over a weekend. You can have OneDrive running on clients over the next week syncing things back the placeholders. Then at the second weekend re-run the migration to copy up the changes made during the week, and roll out folder redirection into the OneDrive folders at the start of the second week.
HereIGoAgain2601 Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Hi how do you use the sharepoint migrator to upload home drives? we have used it to upload our network shared drives but wasn't aware you could do home folders? thought we needed a third party tool for that?
Katy Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 We're moving to onedrive and ditching local (i.e. network drive) storage. My plan so far is to leave the N: mapped (as that's done in the user account properties, not GPO), remove the folder redirection (so documents will point at an empty folder on C:, and turn on onedrive "migrate folders" or whatever it's called - when testing this, with empty folders they are redirected to onedrive within a few minutes of the first logon. The users can then move their files out of the N: drive and into their documents (now redirecting to onedrive) themselves. Eventually we remove the mapped drive.
psydii Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 That method is fine as long as you can get the whole redirection done and synced up to the cloud in one session I.e. before the user logs off. On share point migration tool. Home folders are the source, and the personal site is the target. We just used a csv listing each user’s home folder and the appropriate target.

Well - my plan is subject to testing. The idea behind "move it yourself" is that they can tidy up but I can't see many staff actually bothering... might use the sharepoint migration tool to move the data, then set folder redirection in the GPO to unconfigured (to point it at empty folders on C:) and turn up "move folders to onedrive". Got until Easter to have a firm plan....

Your folder redirection just needs to be Not Configured so the laptop documents are local for KFM to be able to redirect the folders to OneDrive. I've created a test OU and have moved some new starters and test laptops into it with KFM move setup and so far not had any problems so far. Am lucky as it looks like we might be able to replace staff laptops soon so i can kill two birds with one stone and get rid of home folders and move to OneDrive for users documents.
