Gongalong Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Hi folks, Our Exams Officer has asked for a method of comms between invigilators in exam rooms and herself. Has anyone found anything that works particularly well? Of course there are mobile phones, wireless handsets for the phone system, and presumably walkie talkies with a silent function. Anyone had any success with any of these, or something else? Thanks
PotNoodleTech Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 We use walkie talkies. The walkie talkie the invigilator has is turned off unless needed. So the invigilator can turn it on and contact the exams officer if required, but the exams officer can not contact the invigilator without going to the exam room. This seems to work fine!
Sibrows Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 We use PAYG mobiles - the idea is the invigilator makes a call (doesn't say anything) the person on the other end will confirm that they are on their way. The invigilators don't seam to be able to cope with the not saying anything! I was considering something like an Amazon dash button style push button for help but haven't found the time to build it or the right product to re-purpose.

Sibrows Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Sounds like you need a pager! Its not worth the subscription cost
bald_pig Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Its not worth the subscription cost Fine, raspberry pi mini with a button and a script to fire off an email!
Sibrows Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Fine, raspberry pi mini with a button and a script to fire off an email! Is pretty much what I was thinking. Although I was going to use an ESP8266
04amh Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 Guys, We had a similar issue, and just decided to use a wireless doorbell. Sounds stupid, but worked perfectly! Obviously depends how big your school is though, if the exam hall and exam officer are at opposite ends of the school, there are always Wi-Fi doorbells! 1

If the invigilators need to speak to Exams, one of them leaves the room and uses the walkie-talkie. 1
Gongalong Posted February 14, 2019 Author Posted February 14, 2019 Thanks all. We've gone with a set of walkie talkies. 1
