korifugi Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Pet Peeve: Where books, games or films are arranged alphabetically - but anything starting with "The" is arranged due to that rather than ignoring it.
mavhc Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Pet Peeve: Where books, games or films are arranged alphabetically - but anything starting with "The" is arranged due to that rather than ignoring it. Need an agreed list on everything to ignore though, A? On? Le?
Garacesh Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) Pet Peeve: Where books, games or films are arranged alphabetically - but anything starting with "The" is arranged due to that rather than ignoring it. Oooooh I predict a riot mildly emphatic debate. Personally I think that's the way it should be done. E.g. the title isn't "Neverending Story", it's "The Neverending Story" Same goes for A etc. Edit: (Well, if you want to be really pedantic it's Die unendliche Geschichte, but shh!) LeMarchand Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Oooooh I predict a riot mildly emphatic debate. Personally I think that's the way it should be done. The title isn't "Neverending Story", it's "The Neverending Story" Same goes for A. Disagree. One's library would all be concentrated in the "T"s with a lesser concentration in the "A"s if we followed that. Hence why cataloguing software tends to file the above example as "Neverending Story, The". Probably not enough titles beginning with "Le" (outside of collections of French publications) or "On" to cause that problem. I arrange by author (books only), then title with series in order (which can get complicated!). E.G.: Edgar Rice Burroughs would go Barsoom (starting with [A] Princess of Mars), Caspak (The Land That Time Forgot, The People That... then Out of Time's Abyss), Pellucidar (starting with At the Earth's Core), Tarzan (starting with Tarzan of the Apes). Tarzan at the Earth's Core gets tricky...
6Foot2 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Following these posts: Pet Peeve: Where books, games or films are arranged alphabetically - but anything starting with "The" is arranged due to that rather than ignoring it. And to head off a likley MOD intervention, I have created this thread with poll attached. 1
LeMarchand Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Good thinking! My thoughts copied over: Oooooh I predict a riot mildly emphatic debate. Personally I think that's the way it should be done. 6Foot2 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I am used to having the article at the end, but as long as I know how things are sorted in any one particular list/collection, I really don't mind.
korifugi Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 THread created, with poll attached. Link: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/203519-sorting-titles-ignore-articles-not.html Okay - it now looks like I've DONE an annoying thing by creating division! Keep it civil, folks!
Garacesh Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) Lol I'd just reported the first post saying it should probably be split off as you were making this poll The concentration of one's library is of no relevance to me. The library is still going to have the same number of entries/take up the same amount of physical space/etc regardless of how it is sorted. You sort things to make them easier to locate, not to achieve a pleasing equal distribution Why, when we already have appropriate sorting methods, must we then water down those rules even further arbitrarily? It makes no sense to me that 'Sorted in Alphabetical Order' should actually mean 'Alphabetical Order, except where it starts with The, A, or YRE' Besides, if you stick all the 'The's together and it's incredibly easy to skim over the first word to carry on the alphabetical sorting. I find that when you space all the 'The's out in the rest of the library, it breaks the flow as you're skimming through it and makes it take longer. And Rest of the Title, The is an even more stupid way of cataloguing things Edited January 30, 2019 by Garacesh
elsiegee40 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I have probably confused this threda completely. Split it off from the original only to find a new thread created, so I merged them. Sorry for the confusion. I was trying to sort it out

DJ-1701 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 How about organising by book colour in decimal RGB value under reverse numerical order? As long as your system works for you, you can just sit back and say...
Garacesh Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 As long as your system works for you Are you suggesting that we stop trying to enforce our personal opinions as objectively superior methods, agree to disagree, and move on with our lives? 1
mavhc Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 My books are ordered by size, because I have too many to waste shelf height, then it's by author #physicalworldproblems
