Environmental Monitoring in Server Room

Recommended Posts

Posted

After playing air-con roulette last summer in the server room when one of the units b0rked and iced up I'm looking for some monitoring hardware.

I've looked at offerings from APC and Blackbox which range from _expensive_ to manky.

I need:

temperature and humidity monitoring

email notification.

remote administration

Would be nice:

ports for additional sensors

sms notification (though I can kludge this via email)

external relay(s)

remote shutdown of servers would be brilliant, but might be too expensive.

Does anyone have any recommendations / experience?

Cheers

OpenXtra are one of the uk resellers.

To measure temp and humidity in up to 4 locations you would need to buy the EM1 monitor and a temp/humidity sensor for it. £185 for the monitor which doesn't seem too bad.

http://www.openxtra.co.uk/product.php/16/1/

Or just to do temperature you could get the E4 monitor £165 which monitors 4 locations or the E16 that monitors 16 locations for £315.

There are also packages available

we have bought the APC 5000 and the seperate network card. (for about £1500)

we have the sensor measuring the heat at the mo but soon to expand to humidity

monitor all this via its web page and send email notices to you if the power drops etc.

Install the APC control on any server, configure its shutdown procedure (resart/shutdown etc) and jobs a good-un!

I was wondering is there anything new on this topic?

What I'm after is a cheapie min max indoor thermometer (those sold in DIY stores tend to be for outdoor use only) to gather data to prove to the SMT that leaving a server on in a locked south facing room is a recipe for disaster!
