Why did no one tell me about these?

After seeing John at the TechNet roadshow he showed me his phone, a HP iPAQ 514, abd boy was I impressed!

I'd been after a small SIM free smart phone for a while now but was always put off by the price, but buying thorugh Amazon only cost me £123, not at all bad I thought. Anyway, I've ordered one from here Welcome To Jarvis Online hurrah!

They're good...I bought one at christmas..heh.

 

Make sure it's got the latest flash firmware update off the HP site though...the battery life was quite rollercoaster until I put it on mine..now I get 2 weeks on a charge.

 

Got mine linked into exchange, home webmail, internet, SIP..good fun. You can lose the startup jingle as well..heh..that really lets WM6 down.

About the only thing that tiddles me off with it on occasion is the low battery handler..there doesn't appear to be one. It just goes from "on" to "off" with no warnings..

The low battery, mine does warn me on the latest firmware flash from the HP site (I did that as soon as I got it) it does an full screen info popup that says that its low and i should consider recharging (or something along that line) so it does tell you, but only once.

Hmm..I'll check again, but compared to WM2003 MPX200 it's positively silent..the MPX used to beep for a good 30 minutes before dying..this one just says nothing at all until I pull it out and find it's powered down.

 

That said, I was off work yesterday with a cough/cold/bad head etc, and could barely crawl out of bed...and it was incredibly useful to have a phone point of contact and both work and home e-mail being checked by it over wifi. The voice reply to e-mails is good...

Still got the cough, sore throat is easing, still sniffing. Either it's hayfever, or one of the little darlings has infected me..sigh.

 

Alcohol could only ease the pain.. I ended up having to drive as well..not a nice experience with slowed reflexes..heaters on full, windows shut, fleece and thermals on, AC/DC on loud..and I was dead to the world by 10.

It only made a weedy noise but it did display a big full screen warning on mine which you had to dismiss so it was obvious that it needed dealing with.

That's a very tempting price. I like HP kit, very reliable.

 

My current HTC Wizard is starting to give out, and it's far too bulky to carry around.

seems like a better version of my i-mate sp5

the 514 will probably be my next phone when it comes down in price. they're £80-£90 on ebay. bit pricey for me. I only just got my sp5 for £50. thats the kind of amount I like to buy a phone for. In a year those ipaqs will be cheaper. although there's not exactly a lot of them around even now.

next thing to figure out on mine: how to get ie to use the free wireless on virgin trains.
