Workstation imaging via Microsoft Intune (Azure AD)

Hi folks,

 

Hope you're all doing well.

New year, new challenges and one of the challenges I'm trying to look into is imaging workstations using Microsoft Intune using Azure for O365 education.

 

Have any of you used this method to deploy OS and apps?

I've been researching this topic and even would like to do some training to understand how this works.

 

So just opening up this thread to discuss your thoughts or concerns about the future of provisioning.

Well according to MS. Imaging is dead. Using Intune is an MDM for Windows. It is heavily aimed at 1:1 devices.

I'm testing pure AzureAD joined but more more desktops it doesn't make much sense as they only communicate with the onprem infrastructure.

In terms of laptops/tablets which are 1:1 devices which you want to manage when offsite it makes sense.

Things such as pushing win32 apps exe/msi were only added in the autumn and Administrative Templates were only added last month (only for AuzreAD joined not Hybrid joined).

 

So at some point it may reach maturity but the notion of a shared device with multiple users seems far from the target use case. It seems to be Kiosk or 1st line workers.

We currently have it setup so it's basically an MDM. Laptop running Win 10 pro out of the box, user can set it up aslong as they select our domain in the setup process and the login with their domain account. Pulls down all the settings etc and we are currently in the process of setting up the Windows store to be full of our apps instead of using SCCM. Still a long way to go but we have 5 users setup this way so far!

Policy is a bit faster than a traditional joined PC depending on how much policy you have. Powershell scripts can be run against user/device.
