Definitely leaves a gap in the market - I guess they can't harvest enough data from them...

It leaves a gap but apparently not one big enough for Google to bother with.

 

Ultimately, Google is a business. If there isn’t enough demand for a product, they’re not going to continue providing it.

I use mine all the time on the back of my set of active speakers no complaints here.

but then it does feel like a very cut down chromecast and as such they dont need both

I have chromecast audio built into my stereo but I've only used it once (airplay is better)
