Guest salan Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi All, Me and my big mouth!!! We have had some work done at the school and whilst the scaffolding has been up, some birds have nested in it! So I said 'It would be nice for the kids if we had a webcam feed to it on the school intranet, so that they could see the youngsters.' MUST remember to keep mouth SHUT!!! So guess what? Yep I have now been told to set it up. Trouble is I have no budget at the mo at all. The only solutions I know of cost money (that ficticious thing). So has anone any solutions that wont cost? I have a webcam (1.3 meg). I have some old machines that I can setup. What about a linux solution? Any ideas? Alan
richard.thomas Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) Probably the best way to do this is to set your webcam to take snapshots every minute or so, Unless you fancy going for the whole realtime streaming. The snapshot method is realativly easy, Download something like Dorgem Download Dorgem, Dorgem 2.1.0 Download and install it on the computer with the webcam connected (Should be fun if this is on scaffolding). With this software you should be able to set it up to upload an image to an FTP server every minute. You might need to setup an ftp server on your intranet server, FileZilla should be the ticket (FileZilla - The free FTP solution) and link the jpeg to your intranet page. SimpleSi Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 EasyWebCam has lots of features and is shareware for 30 days Fwink is free I've used both recently on one of my schools sites recently EasyWebCam saves each snapshot locally so you can use the past events to make a time-lapse film. regards Simon
OutToLunch Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 If you just want regularly updated snapshots and a built in webserver, chuck WCapture on an old PC with the webcam. jedmondson Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I use wheres james webcam at home works quite well and you can put time and date into the photo. all you need is a computer and ftp access and your all set.
