Window 10 Audio Asking for Admin Permission

Hi

 

We've got this odd issue which only started recently, if anyone trys changing the audio settings ie even change the volume etc, it is asking for admin login but only some machines it seems, all a bit random and strange

Any ideas, guessing it will be something straight forward

Could be that clicking the volume icon is actually starting the troubleshooter because there's a problem with sound - like headphones not being plugged in correctly.

I've had this problem as well and it occurs for me when we have a PC connected to a screen via HDMI and an external set of speakers or headphones plugged in. It seems this sometimes confuses Windows and it doesn't know which audio output it should be using.

 

Also happens when the PC has the full realtek driver package installed. When you plug headphones in the realtek software kindly informs you via a pop up (that doesn't always appear on the taskbar, so it just appears behind whatever window you currently have open) that "you have plugged something into the audio jack".

 

Either clicking ok on the pop up or right clicking the Windows 10 volume control and choosing the correct output fixes the problem.

We usually see this when the headphones/speaker are disconnected - if a teacher tries to change the volume it pops up with an admin dialogue. Put the 3.5mm cable back in and its fine.

I think we've narrowed this down after a few more incidents, the windows audio service seems to fail, restart the service seems to fix it

 

Anyone got any ideas, drivers are up to date on the machine as far as windows update goes

Saw something similar a while back and it ended up being an issue with the network and/or local service on the machine. Something to do with permissions if i remember Correctly
