Dos_Box Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 To prevent a lot of disparate threads being created about the new announcements and product launches happening in the US at the CES Show I have created this thread so we can keep them all in one place so as to follow events easily. So if you see something that some of us may have missed if not on one of the mainstream news channels than please feel free to post it up in here. I shall start with this - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/technology-46782199/ces-2019-samsung-s-new-shape-shifting-tvs-revealed - and think it would look just super over my fireplace!
Arthur Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 Finally!!! Nvidia GeForce graphics cards set to support FreeSync displays Six years after G-Sync debuted, Nvidia's proprietary variable refresh rate (VRR) solution for gaming monitors is becoming a little more open. The company announced at CES 2019 that it will soon certify certain FreeSync monitors as 'G-Sync Compatible'. That's big news, as it means that Nvidia graphics card owners will have the option of buying FreeSync gaming monitors instead of being limited to G-Sync models, which are often significantly more expensive due to their physical G-Sync module. Nvidia tested more than 400 FreeSync monitors to find those that met its standards for G-Sync. That included looking at metrics like a wide frame-rate range where VRR could be enabled (eg 60Hz to 144Hz), whether VRR was enabled by default and whether VRR gaming produced any unwanted artefacts like ghosting or flickering. Just 12 monitors made the cut, and they have become the first G-Sync Compatible monitors on the market. G-Sync Compatible monitor support will arrive in the first 2019 Game Ready driver, which is scheduled to be released on 15th January.
Arthur Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 LG's rollable TV is finally going to be released. The LG Display’s 65-inch rollable TV prototype came to CES last year. This year, LG Electronics is bringing it to market as its flagship 4K OLED TV for 2019. Consumers will be able to buy the finished Signature OLED TV R sometime this spring, although for an astronomical, premium price. It’s quite similar to last year’s prototype, but LG has refined the base station a bit and added a 100-watt Dolby Atmos speaker.
Arthur Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 New Samsung Smart TVs will soon have iTunes built in, support AirPlay 2 Two of tech's biggest rivals are working together: Apple and Samsung partnered to make it easier for people to watch iTunes content. In an announcement coming out of CES 2019, the companies stated that 2018 and 2019 Samsung Smart TVs will gain the ability to play iTunes movies and TV shows this year, along with AirPlay 2 support. Last year's Samsung Smart TV models will get these new features via a firmware update, while all 2019 models will come with them built in. A new, dedicated app for iTunes holds all users' movies and TV shows purchased through Apple's service. The app will appear in a carousel along with other services including Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video. Previously, iTunes video playback was limited to the iTunes app on Apple devices and Windows PCs, as well as the Apple TV set-top box. That severely limits users' access to movies and shows they purchased from Apple, considering all the new ways people can consume digital content today (smart TVs, set-top boxes, and mobile apps, to name a few). Now, users will be able to log into their iTunes accounts and play movies and shows directly from their Samsung Smart TV without needing a dedicated Apple device. Other TV manufacturers like LG and Sony are also going to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support. The iTunes app is Samsung exclusive.
Arthur Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 Western Digital Demonstrates 4TB USB-C Thumb Drive Prototype at CES 2019 At CES 2019, Western Digital is demonstrating a prototype of a 4TB thumb drive with a Type-C interface. To be more precise, the form factor is that of a thumb drive, but the Type-C connector currently hangs off a wire. Given that it is a prototype, and has little chance of hitting the market at reasonable price points in the imminent future, this is expected. The main intent is to showcase the technological prowess of SanDisk's flash solutions. As expected, the prototype carries the SanDisk branding. ^ You wouldn't want to lose that!
Arthur Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 (edited) AMD-powered Chromebooks from Acer and HP. Acer: https://chromeunboxed.com/ces-2019-acer-debuts-first-amd-chromebook HP: https://chromeunboxed.com/hp-chromebook-14-amd-x360-g1 There's also a new Chromebook Flip from Asus to replace the C302. https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/01/07/asus-chromebook-flip-c434-succeeds-the-beloved-c302-brings-smaller-bezels-and-intel-8th-gen-processors One of the most praised midrange Chromebooks of the past couple of years is the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302. Ask several of our Android Police writers, and they'll sing you its praises for a good ten minutes, even two years after it was first announced. The world moves forward though, and now we have the C302's successor: the Chromebook Flip C434. According to ASUS, the C434 takes everything people loved about the C302 and makes it better. It has an all-metal construction with brushed silver aluminum to avoid fingerprints, uses Intel's 8th Gen CPUs, and pushes the display to the edges of the body. As a matter of fact, only 5mm of bezel surrounds the display on the sides, which means that ASUS was able to fit a 14" Full-HD display instead of a 12.5", without increasing the Chromebook's size. The weight has jumped up a bit though, from 2.6lbs 1.18 kg to 3.2lbs 1.45 kg. Edited January 9, 2019 by Arthur

Arthur Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 looking to upgrade Do you need any more RGB LEDs? www.theverge.com/2019/1/8/18173567/corsair-capellix-rgb-led-pc-gaming-ces-2019 In the space where you could previously fit four regular LEDs, you can now accommodate one hundred Corsair Capellix lights. The Capellix are up to 60 percent brighter, 60 percent more efficient, and require up to 40 percent less power than existing RGB LEDs. Their space-saving is huge: current LEDs require an assembly that makes each one occupy a space roughly the size of a fingernail, 2.8mm cubed, whereas the Capellix stuff is stripped down to a shockingly tiny 0.2mm cubed. Eager to secure Capellix as an advantage over other gaming peripheral and component makers, Corsair has gone to the trouble of basically purchasing the production line of its manufacturing partner. So, for a while at least, Corsair will have the snazziest, most power-efficient RGB LEDs in the business. The Capellix-equipped Dominator Platinum RGB RAM sticks are launching in February 2019. So far at CES, the Capellix announcement is the thing that’s struck me as the biggest upgrade over the status quo. Granted, it’s not going to change the world in terms of functionality, but it’s shrinking decorative LEDs to a size that’s in the neighborhood of the LEDs that are used for the latest TVs and displays.
Andrew_C Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned the award winning "device" that has since been banned. Maybe I'm not all that surprised! Maybe best to treat it as NSFW (all be it a BBC link).
Arthur Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 (edited) AMD are to be making their big announcements at 9am Pacific Time (5pm UK) today and I gather there are a LOT of people interested in what they will have to announce. AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen 'Matisse' Coming Mid 2019: Eight Core Zen 2 with PCIe 4.0 on Desktop Blink and you miss it: AMD's keynote address this year was a whirlwind of primetime announcements for the company. The message is clear: AMD is committing itself to 7nm as the future process note that will drive the company's innovations starting in 2019. The first consumer products on 7nm will be the Ryzen 3rd Generation Desktop processors, using Zen 2 cores, offering more than competitive performance against Intel's best hardware. Also on the docket is a return to high-end graphics performance, with AMD set to release a 7nm graphics card that can spar blow-for-blow with the competition at the $700 price barrier. Attacking the Mainstream CPU Market: Toe to Toe with Core i9-9900K Ignore everything you might have heard about what AMD’s future desktop CPU is going to be. Here are most of the details you need to know. The new parts, codenamed Matisse, will be coming to market in mid-2019 (sometime in Q2 or Q3). The processor the company had on display was made from two pieces of silicon on the package: one eight-core 7nm chiplet made at TSMC, and a 14nm input/output chiplet with the dual memory controllers and the PCIe lanes, made at GlobalFoundries. The company did state that it is the world’s first 7nm gaming CPU, and will also be the world’s first mainstream CPU to support PCIe 4.0 x16. At this time the company is not commenting on if the 3rd Gen is going to have a maximum of eight cores, or if this represents the best processor of the whole family. Because the processor is still far away from launch, frequencies are not being finalized yet. However, the processor is for the AM4 socket, given that AMD has previously said that it intends to keep backwards compatibility for several generations. That will mean that this CPU will work in current 300 and 400-series AMD motherboards. What this means for PCIe 4.0 is actually fairly simple. We expect there to be a new line of motherboards presumably something like X570 that will be PCIe 4.0 compatible, for any new PCIe 4.0 graphics cards that will be coming to market. One of the differences with PCIe 4.0 is that it can only handle PCB traces up to 7 inches before needing a redriver/retimer, so these extra ICs are needed for ports lower down the board. But, the first PCIe slot on most motherboards is in that limit, so it would appear that a lot of current 300 and 400 series motherboards, assuming the traces adhere to signal integrity specifications, could have their first PCIe slot rated at PCIe 4.0 with new firmware. I think I might upgrade my PC too. Edited January 9, 2019 by Arthur

Arthur Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 A tent on wheels? It does look cooler than your typical caravan though. BMW has tried to fix caravans BMW’s new concept should be music to the eyes and ears of anyone who has been stuck behind a caravan on a B road. The trend in motoring for ever bigger cars has been accompanied by an ability to pull larger loads, and as such, caravans have become even bigger fibreglass behemoths. Now though, BMW’s Designworks team have collaborated with American outdoor enthusiasts The North Face to redesign the traditional home on wheels. Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the ‘Futurelight’ Camper is made from a lightweight fabric stretched over a tubular frame, creating a caravan that would look more at home with Matt Damon on Mars than in the Somerset countryside.

appfoto Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 I do know that EU law stipulates that manufacturers must give the consumer a minimum 2-year guarantee (legal guarantee) as a protection against faulty goods, or goods that don't look or work as advertised. In some countries national law may require even longer guarantees. You could try holding out for replacement components or even compensation :-)
Arthur Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 I don't think my trolleys are quite ready for a 15 FOOT Chromebook just yet! At least the Chromebooks will be easy to find if they go missing. Seriously though, isn't the 1366x768 resolution on the non-touch models a bit low for a 15.6" screen?? I didn't think they made LCDs that size with such a low resolution. The pixels are going to be huge!
