Harddrive destruction

Hey all, how do you handle physically destroying hard drives theses days? Although some drives go off to the recycle company who demonstrate their policies and GDPR compliance for data removal, I am still not at ease with sending drives off from servers.

Smash smash with Mr Hammer, and then spread to each corner of the globe. Only to be reunited when one is dug up and a UV light is on it.

Electric drill straight through the platters a few times.

 

Or a child with a set of screwdrivers. My son loved taking the drives apart to get to the magnets and did a very good job of scratching and bending the platters beyond reading ever again.

2.5 drive platters are made of something brittle so all you need to do is drive a stake through their little hearts and the platters shatter. 3.5 are more solid but no match for a decent drill. We photograph all our drives to keep a record for GDPR purposes.

However we use generally use a licenced contractor like Stone or PRM Green.

You don't need to physically destroy working drives. You can erase them using software or a machine. Here before any drive leaves site it goes through that process.

You don't NEED to, but it feels very satisfying while you're doing it

A big mallet, and a picture of the latest member of staff who has annoyed you. Works a treat, and you feel so much better after too!
