Office 365 Email Encryption for Outlook

Hello

 

In the Office 365 portal users have the option to send encrypted emails by selecting the 'Protect' option and 'Encrypt' from the drop-down menu. However, how can this option to use 'Protect' be available in Outlook if users use Outlook for their Office 365 ?

Encrypt a single message

 

In message that you are composing, click File > Properties.

 

Click Security Settings, and then select the Encrypt message contents and attachments check box.

 

Compose your message, and then click Send.

 

You can also create a mail rule so a word in the subject encrypts it automatically. I.e **ENCRYPT**

Thanks, i'm not sure where File > Properties is as I am using Outlook 2013.

 

Anyway, I setup a rule in O365 which allows for the word 'Encrypt' being added to the subject line and this works. However, I do have another question further on from this. I have attached a document which shows that an encryption rule has been set up via the O365 portal but when using Outlook this rule does not appear as shown in the attachmentS.

Perhaps because it is set in the File menu as per my last post? Looking at your screenshot, File should be blue button top left.

No, what I mean is there is no 'properties' option when you select 'File' as below :-

Thank you for confirming that. I did wonder. Hopefully Microsoft will one day add the Encryption option like they do in OWA as seems a little crazy not to.

I'm not sure what the point of O365 encryption is, if you send the email to the wrong person they can still read it, if someone can intercept that person's email the interceptor can still read it. What attack is it preventing?

 

Standard S/MIME has been in Outlook for decades and does it properly
