[sims] Proper SIMS aspect/resultset setup?

Hi all,

 

Just a quick question about the setup of aspects and resultsets within SIMS.

 

We currently have a mix match of both of the examples below, depending on key stage and what it is used for, which I would like to redo them so all are the same. But I'm wondering which is the correct way if we wish to use tracking grids etc which we do not currently use.

Aspects:

Maths

 

Resultsets:

Capture1 - Current Level

Capture1 - Predicted Level

Capture1 - Effort

Capture2 - Current Level

Capture2 - Predicted Level

Capture2 - Effort

 

2.

Aspects:

Maths - Current Level

Maths - Predicted Level

Maths - Effort

 

Resultsets:

Capture1

Capture2

 

Or is there another way that I'm missing!?!

There are a lot of subtleties and nuances to Assessment Manager. The starting point for any conversation around this is, What output/analysis do you want from the system? This will determine what method to implement

I've set it up similar to your 2nd example. I prefer my aspects to have a specific meaning and not dependant on a result set to define them. It also gives you more flexibility to have different grade sets for the various aspects - never mix different types of grade in a grade set. My result sets therefore are generally just a snapshot in time, but there are exceptions. Taking time to set up categories will help a great deal to filter the aspects, e.g. KS4 and Predicted. I haven't properly used the custom tracking grids however so I'm not sure of the best setup for those. Edited December 14, 2018 by Jonsi

The first example wouldn't work unless you have the same grades for effort and attainment, you will also end up with a long list of resultsets which can't be filtered the same as the list of aspects. The second option in my opinion is the best and will work with tracking grids and allow for useful analysis, as the resultsets are each data collection you can make use of locking resultsets to manage data entry as well.

Bear in mind that if you do that some graphs/analysis will no longer be accessible to you (some of that could potentially be mitigated by using the same grade set). E.g. some of the Discover graphs that show all 3 strands over time on the same graph, or some of the analysis grids that show all 3 together, etc.
