Apple Mac Computer Slow

Hi Guys

 

I'm not an Apple Mac computer fan or expert, but have a client who uses one and syas it is running very slow. What is the best way to speed one of these things up ?

Usual things to try are resetting NVRAM (hold down cmd, option, P and R until you hear the chime a second time) and the SMC (that’ll depend on the model of Mac - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295) and I also like to do Safe Boot once to clear out caches on the system drive. That’s done by holding shift while it boots. Will take longer as it check things and loads basic drivers but once it’s at the login window, you can reboot it as normal. What type of Mac is it and which version of macOS is it running?

 

You could run Apple's Hardware Test / Diagnostics app to find out if there's any faulty hardware (like a hard drive).

If the Mac came with a 5,400rpm HDD or 4GB RAM one of the easiest ways to speed it up is to replace the drive with an SSD and upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB.

Definitely this, if it’s the 5400rpm drive then they are absolute dogs! I put an ssd in a 2014 mini with the original 4gb ram and it was a different machine.

We had 2014 Mac Minis which were massively slower than 2010 iMacs because of the appalling HDDs they fitted in them. SSDs transform them. You may need some special (i.e. very small) torx bits to crack them open but it’s easy enough - iFixit have some good guides on this.
