ACER TMB 1177 Wifi Issue

Hi All ... I wasn't sure where to post this ... but i am having trouble with my ACER TMB 117's - all 100 of them - running Windows 10 ... not getting all the GPO stuff. I have emailed ACER support - and this is part of the email ...

 

"On WiFi, when they boot up, you only see ‘computer settings’ and then they go straight to the login screen, and for a brief second, before you login, the Network symbol (bottom right in task bar) has an X – then it kicks in, connects to wifi and the login is always ok. From there they pick up all the settings as designated in User section of Group Policies.

 

Therefore, they are not getting the group policies settings from the computer configuration section which ls includes installing software.

 

But when you attach a Lan cable you get the usual network preamble like getting all the registry, printer settings, software deployment and they start installing all deployed software.

I had an ACER Technician here on another job and he saw it and we looked into the bios and saw no options and he didn’t have any answers. We questioned the driver but it is the latest one that had been downloaded a few months back. He also saw how a laptop with a network cable attached did boot up in the normal way and got ALL the designated the Group Policies."

... but nothing has worked.

 

The only time i get success is when I run the Network ID wizard and it works (most times) on the reboot (once) .. and if i re-image via MDT (with a cable of course!)

 

I manually reinstalled the driver on one today, and it worked once only straight after - ensuing boot ups were unsuccessful!

 

So -- any suggestions will be most welcomed (apart from the hammer/brick options!)

I did seem to have a similar problem with certain wireless adapters here a while back that only popped up after moving to 1709. I managed to get them working by modifying a registry key to disable active probing. Might be worth a shot as a test...

 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet > EnableActiveProbing = 0

Thanks ... I will give that a try next week.

 

I started the images with 1609- but since then I set up one with 1703 and i have had the the problem with both versions. At this site i haven't moved on to 1709 - unlike the other two sites I work at.

 

With the 1609 version I had issues with the wifi full-stop - as they would just go offline and i had to reinstall the later wifi driver. But when i got to 1703 i had constructed my MDT differently, so that the laptops would get only the specific drivers for that make and model. With 1609 - just I had all my devices getting their drivers from a large pool.

 

The issue is the same for all 100 of them irrespective of the version.

 

Also any GPO's i set up to try things wont get picked up unless they are connected via cable - and they need dongles BTW - and logistically given my working conditions its a nightmare!

 

I recently had to install some national testing software on them and that is when I picked up the issue that had been obviously going on on for ages. So programming Flash and Java updates was a waste of time for them. Plus our Arts teacher wanted some extra software to go on them.

 

In the end i used PDQdeploy - but then I had to make sure all laptops were turned on as it was only the free version.

Perhaps a couple of other things you could also try is to disable the option that allows Windows to put the WiFi adapter into power save mode. Also perhaps try disabling hybrid shutdown as that also seemed to cause a few issues with wireless clients here where the WiFi would take ages to wake back up.

Thanks ... pretty sure that they are among the number of things I have also tried, but will review Monday when back on site.

I am considering testing a manual install to see if that makes a difference.

I'm sure there is a group policy setting that says wait for the network, I used to have issues with non-portfast Dlink switches..

 

EDIT: I think the policy is "Change Group Policy processing to run asynchronously when a slow network is detected," OPTION: 2 - If the policy setting "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" is enabled.

 

I think this is the policy that helped me. (back in Vista Days)

 

EDIT2 : I think you can delay how long group policy waits to process the GPO default is 30 seconds.. (i'd be surprised if your laptops were that slow)

Appreciate the thoughts ... and i have also tried to implement those. I have re-imaged a few since then and that is when they will pick up ALL GPO changes .. but even then the same problem persists.

As Chazzy2501 has said there is a setting for this which should work (note the "should" this is windows afterall)

GPO

-Admin templates

-System

-Logon

-Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = Enabled

I know i have tried a lot of things and i will collate and review these suggestions to ensure i have implemented them all.
