OneDrive Sync - Filling up C drive on local machines in network.

What's the best solution to stop OneDrive from synchronising files back to the staff's local profile?

 

It's a major, major issue as we're going around the school noticing the C drives are completely full, rendering them useless until we delete all the local profiles or whatever.

Peoples Profiles are like 7GB odd....maybe more. If 20 people have logged on we quickly run out of space.

 

We've noticed our internet is super slow lately too - maybe due to the files syncing to local profile when users move computers?

 

We just want users to be able to USE onedrive to save / access files. We don't want local copies of everyone onedrive on everyone local profile.

There is a GPO for Files on Demand, you need to be running Windows 10 1709 or above.

Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > OneDrive > Enable OneDrive Files On-Demand

 

That will still use up some space and may be a problem over time, as they access more files.

So on windows 7 desktops, are we pretty much scuppered ?

I was wondering whether disabling onedrive from windows start up would make any difference ?

Instead of using the OneDrive App you can map the OneDrive to a share using the onedrive mapper script https://www.lieben.nu/liebensraum/onedrivemapper/

We tried this, would not run over GPO for some reason. We may look back at it or paid solutions. Thanks so far.

We're pretty sure we're going to go for IAM Cloud, maps their OneDrive account and any shared Sharepoint areas. Microsoft are urging people not to use custom mapping, the lieben script is no longer being updated, any change to the authentication method with O365 will break the script. Get on Windows 10 and use Files on Demand to not fill up the C drive.

If you're just using office to open/save files from onedrive then you don't need the onedrive client. But in truth the experience on a shared computer prior to files on demand is poor. Another cost option is fslogix, but I'd put the effort into going to win10 1803.

Was updated only a month ago.

It still works just fine, and when wrapped up to make an .exe runs just fine from startup or triggered via a GPO.

 

All you need to make sure of is either Windows 10, or have Powershell V3 on your Windows 7 boxes.
