Google Classroom + Email without gmail

We've been using G-Suite for a few years now, and we've an issue with Classroom and e-mail. Specifically on the Student Work tab, there is a link to email students - however this seems to require Google Gmail set-up to work:

 

 

We use Exchange in school - is there anyway anybody has found to get this functionality to work without using Gmail?

It's designed to be used with gmail as part of gsuite. I personally think if you want to use another email system your shooting yourselves in the foot, move the pupils to gmail as it's so tightly integrated with classroom and works great!
