Cannot map drive (but can navigate to it) read only permissions?

A teacher has just asked me to map the shared drive his class uses to his laptop.

No problem I thought, I do this all the time.

However, this time it came up asking for network access credentials.

So I checked through the permissions of the share and made sure he is in the correct security group etc.

The thing is, on this share the security group he is in (Teachers) only has read permissions.

Stranger still is that I could navigate to it via searching the UNC and also make a shortcut on his desktop.

I just couldn't map it!

I guess I've just got that Friday feeling and can't get my head around the difference in map/shortcut/navigate(search).

In the end I gave his security group full permissions, as it's not an issue for the teachers to have that on the their own class shared drive.

Just wondered if someone could give me a quick answer as to why?
