Integrating Intel(R)_USB_3.0_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver into Windows 7 Install

I am trying to inject the above USB 3.0 driver package into windows 7 installation files on a disc. In the files on the Windows 7 installation disc, I am

clicking on sources, then right clicking on the boot.wim file. I go to 7-Zip and click open archive on the boot.wim file.

 

When I try to copy over the Intel®_USB_3.0_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver folder into the boot.wim file, I get the error message;

The parameter is incorrect.

 

Does anyone have any ideas about what this error message may mean?

Have you tried simplifying the name of the driver? Might be one of the '(' or '_' confusing it or just the length of the driver.

 

Change it to something like IntelUSB and give it ago

I don't think you can inject a driver that way, as far as I know it has to be done with DISM: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/add-and-remove-drivers-to-an-offline-windows-image

You can also use something like Win Toolkit, which is essentially a GUI for DISM, but it's overkill for what you need.

Can you just confirm that you're not attempting to edit a boot.wim file on a 'disc', as in DVD disc - that wouldn't work.

When I had to rebuild a Windows 7 PC recently I used the Simplix Update Pack to make the process a lot easier/faster.

 

It integrates the latest Microsoft updates (critical, recommended, and security), plus IE11, the hotfix to add support for NVMe SSDs and almost all USB 3.0/3.1 drivers.

 

Instructions

 

1. Download and run the update patch linked below to download the full Update Pack (~700MB).

2. Copy your Windows 7 SP1 install.wim somewhere on your HDD/SSD and then run the following command to perform the integration. This will take a while.
    
   

   UpdatePack7R2-18.11.15.exe /ie11 /WimFile=C:\Temp\install.wim /Index=*

   
    
   

3. Once it has finished, overwrite the install.wim on your Windows 7 install media with the updated install.wim and then install Windows 7.

I go to 7-Zip and click open archive on the boot.wim file.

7-Zip can't modify .wim files, only read/extract the contents.
