Wiring advice

Hi,

 

I got myself an LED floodlight (50Watts) and want to put it up overlooking my garden.

 

I dont want to wire it up to the mains so my plan is to wire it and put it through a gap in the house wall and plug it in to a normal socket.

 

Could someone advise me on which cable I could use below to hook it up from the light to the plug?

50W is less than 0.3A current, so either would be suitable BUT:-

 

a) Always use a RCCB at the socket you are plugging into

b) consider the environment in which the cable will be running - abrasion / light / water / temperature will all degrade cables

c) consider the length of the cable run - if it's longer than a few feet I'd go for higher rated cable

d) consider the light fitting - if it is double insulated it should not be wired with an earth conductor

It will be a maximum of 8 metres running up and pinned to the wall.

 

Il have to check the light fitting tonight. How come it should not be earthed if ouble isulated?

If you are going that far, up a brick wall which will lead to abrasion, with exposure to sunlight and a range of temperatures I would suggest getting proper external flex. Something like "arctic" flex or rubber "pond pump" flex.

 

If an item is double insulated there will be nowhere to terminate the earth and so you will run the risk of this contacting one of the other conductors leading to shorts.
