Link: Crewe woman, 105, says music is key to a long life - BBC News

A 105-year-old has said singing has kept her feeling young and that she still has ambitions of performing a concert in her care home in Crewe.

Ivy Hart has been heavily critical of some of the entertainers brought in by staff at Belong Crewe.

After a lifetime of singing in choirs, concerts and churches, Mrs Hart said she could give the professionals a run for their money.

"No they weren't good," she said. "I very nearly put my name down. I would have done it any time."

"Take life as it comes," is her advice to the younger generation. "Do the best you can with it."

Born in Crewe, Mrs Hart went to Bedford Street School where she said she was often brought to the front of the class to sing.

Despite her father dying when she was four, she said her mother always ensured she had money to pay for singing lessons.

"My mother could sing but she's not like me - forthcoming," Mrs Hart chuckled.

She met her husband, George, at a dance hall in Crewe in her mid-20s.

"He was absolutely lovely," her niece Pam said. "They were like a mum and dad to me."

He worked for the RAF at Crewe Municipal Buildings and the pair later moved to Preston, but he died a few years later.

Singing continued to be a passion for Mrs Hart, which continued right through her life, including performing alongside the Rochdale Band at Nantwich Civic Hall in 1976.

She returned to Crewe in her 50s and became a teacher at a school for boys with learning difficulties.

"I loved them to bits, those boys," she remembered. "I was very sorry when I had to retire."

Mrs Hart lived independently until the age of 104, when she moved into Belong Crewe.

"She's definitely a character," said carer worker Emma Spurrier. "I think everyone should have a bit of Ivy in their life."

This is a few months old now, but I was reminded of it recently and thought I'd share it here. A pro cycling team had all their bikes stolen at the Women's Tour of Britain last year. They were still able to complete the event because other teams loaned them spare bikes and other teams' mechanics helped set up the bikes - unlike the things we buy in Halfords, pro bikes have different saddles, handlebars, pedals and pedal cranks specific to the size and preferences of each rider, so getting a bike ready can be a lot of work.

I wonder how many other sports would see a response like this?

Link: South Korean Universities Deny Admission To Applicants With Bullying Records

Quote

Flagship South Korean universities have started denying admission to applicants with records of school bullying, a first for the nation's top institutions. Data disclosed by Representative Kang Kyung-sook of the minor Rebuilding Korea Party revealed that six of the country's 10 national flagship universities turned away a total of 45 applicants during the 2025 admissions cycle due to their disciplinary records.

Currently, students in Korea apply to universities through two main routes. Regular admission relies on College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) scores, known in Korean as "suneung", while early admission can be secured using school grades, extracurriculars and interviews.

Two students at the Seoul National University (SNU) submitted exemplary CSAT scores but were denied admission owing to their bullying past. Similarly, six students from the early admissions cycle and two from the regular admissions cycle were rejected by Pusan National University.

At Kangwon National University, five early admissions were rejected, while Jeonbuk National University had five cases in total. Kyungpook National University rejected 22 applicants, the highest number among national universities, according to a report in Korea JoongAng Daily...

* Good news because with this policy in place, students will be encouraged to focus on their academic potential and personal growth in a safe environment, knowing that their well-being is prioritised over toxic behaviour, those who want a place at university anyway.

"Britain's loneliest sheep" has given birth for the first time.

Fiona won hearts across the globe when she was rescued from the foot of a steep coastal cliff close to the Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands in 2023.

Kayaker Jill Turner first spotted the stranded ewe in 2021 and then raised the alarm when she saw her on her own again two years later - which led to Fiona being dubbed "Britain's loneliest sheep".

Fiona was winched to safety during a daring rescue mission and taken into the care of Dalscone Farm in Dumfries.

The farm said she had now traded her title for "world's best mum" after giving birth to two healthy lambs - a boy and a girl - on Tuesday night...

A supermarket in Orkney has been giving away bananas after accidentally ordering an estimated 38,000 of them - almost double the entire population of the islands.

Tesco in Kirkwall had intended to order 380kg (750lbs) of the fruit but a slip-up meant it ordered 380 wholesale boxes, each containing about 100 bananas.

The surplus boxes, which arrived at the weekend, would normally have been returned to the mainland but high winds and subsequent ferry disruption meant this was not possible.

A Tesco spokesperson said the superstore has now been giving the boxes away to community groups and schools across the area....

Perhaps the air in Orkney holds a special quality during this time of year...

We've just about used the Blutac that we got about 8 years ago; 10 outers instead of packs.
