More VoIP - but complexey!

We currently have an old centrex style system. This worked fine when we were a single primary school.

 

Now we have three sites, over 200 children and the doesnt work.

 

At the new sites were given (and had no choice in) a hybrid system. This ran each copper line to a comms cabs and you patcheda room network port into it. The cliet end of trhe network socket had an RJ11 to RJ45 coverroe to use a stanrdard phone.

 

THe problem we have is:

 

* All three sites are sperated by about 1/4 of a mile each

* We are a BCC maintained special so no will touch us.

* Virgin refused to help

* BCC offered their to range CISCO system.

 

Boviously our concerns are running several conncurrent IDSN lines (and whether we'd ever break even) or if the industry is moving to IT only what happens if our internet line goes down?

Depending on the current system you are using there may not need to be any massive changes i.e. changing to VoIP you maybe able to keep what you currently have.

 

Do you have a network link between each site?

 

I have seen it done before with phone systems where they break out via your LAN and you can link each system together, to dial another school you use a short code i.e. 74 then dial the extension of the school you are calling or 74 0 would call the switchboard.

 

The ideal world would be to look at a VoIP system but that is cost that may need to be factored in a long term plan. Doing what I suggested if your systems allow it will just extend your current system but link it over your LAN/WAN/VPN setup. Not saying all phone systems support it but might be worth a look in the short term.
