Nvidia GTX 1080Ti or 2080?

Whattup Y'all

 

So I'm at a bit of a conundrum. As I'm sure are most people. Basically having saved since my last GPU purchase (GTX 970) I have enough money to buy either of these cards to upgrade to.

 

Problem is all the research I've done (& I've done a lot) all points to the 1080Ti being just as fast as the 2080 but around £100 cheaper. So best bang for buck I would decide 1080Ti but then theres the issues of RTX and DLSS, so RTX I couldn't really care less about I'll be honest due to the fact even though these cards can do RTX it will be minmal to start with in games and if it's not and they go full scale RTX this GPU isn't cut out for it so that I can look passed.

 

DLSS though is another story, it seems that if enough games start to support DLSS before Nvidia bring out their "30XX cards" suddenly it makes more sense to buy 2080 but what if game developers take their time with this technology then you've wasted £100.

 

I've never been in a position where it's been so hard to choose between a previous gen card and a new one, I think Nvidia have kicked us gamers in the back hard here. What could have been better was to wait for game devs to beta test and use DLSS before bringing out the card so you had some real world experience of the difference it can make but they didn't!

 

So what now?? Could I ask what you guys would prefer and why?

 

I'm starting to think about waiting completely now, sticking with the old 970 and waiting for the next generation cards to come out as one would hope they'd be based off the 7nm architecture!!

What res is your monitor out of interest?

It's a 4k Monitor only 60Hz though!

I always tend to say this, but in this price/performance bracket you need to wait. AMD have a Polaris replacement card in testing (Navi), and due to the potential for that and the current pricing of RX 580 it could be a good alternative, and maybe even force down Nvidia's ludicrous pricing (AMD did it to Intel already with Ryzen, so it's more than possible).

If you wait for AMD to make a good card you'll be waiting for a couple of years!

 

If I were you I'd snag a second hand low use 1080ti off someone who doesn't care about spunking all their money and has bought a 2080ti. There are plenty of them around!

 

Got Palit 1080ti here and it's been a great card.

Just built a brand new setup based around the Ryzen 2700x and was in the same position. I ended up getting a new Gigabyte 1080ti mainly down to the amount of people i'm reading about who are having to RMA their new RTX cards due to numerous different issues. This latest line definitely seems like it should have been in development for another few months and maybe released alongside a few games that actually take advantage of the new features.

 

My 1080ti handles everything I throw at it with ease, whether it be 4k or VR.

and apparently 2080ti's have a higher than normal failure rate so might be worth waiting a bit anyway
