Hi,

We currently run one physical host that has Windows Server 2012 R2 installed with the Hyper-V role that runs two virtual machines. One being the domain controller, the other holding SIMS and both run Server 2012 R2.

I'm after some advice on how to upgrade them to Server 2016 Standard. I don't like the thought of in-place upgrades but my school is not in a position to expand the server infrastructure at present.

Should I start by shutting VMs down and upgrade the host Server 2012 R2 first then do the VMs or vice-versa?

Thanks

I'd generally upgrade whatever is hosting underneath first as then you don't need to wait to backup upgraded VMs before upgrading the host.
