HP Laptop with Optane = Slow with Bitlocker

Hi.

I'm setting up a new HP Laptop - on paper this things looks good; i5 8th Gen, 4Gb Ram (could be more really). The drive has optane memory to help it along, a 16Gb Solid State Memory unit to partner the 1Tb Hard Drive.

 

I've re-imaged it several times (and re-paired the Optane drive each time), but as soon as I implement Bitlocker this thing runs like a dog - even not running bitlocker is not the most responsive of devices. The hard drive itself is a 5400rpm drive, so not surprising really.

 

I'm tempted to just get a SSD installed in it but it's quite major surgery on this device to fit it - or may just send it back as a pile of crap!

 

Anybody else using a laptop with Optane offer any insight?

Yes - I did.

 

Working round it for now by splitting the hard drive into two partitions and bitlock the 2nd partition. So the system is not encrypted and runs at a decent rate but 'important' files are stored in the encrypted drive. Not ideal, but it's a solution for now.

Interesting - this more an issue with data being visible rather than speed - but it's interesting.

True. Normally wouldn't but this seemed on paper a good combination of speed and storage but now not convinced so much.

 

For now it's working, so will do for a bit.

My thinking is if that way round exposes data, then it may well be doing loads of encryption/unencryption moving data between the HDD, optane drive and memory?

Sooooo...... went home last night not entirely happy with the setup. Encrypted yes, but not how I would really really like to let me sleep peacefully at night.

 

So, tried as suggested, turn off Optane, Restart, Enable Bitlocker, Restart, Encrypt Drive, Re-enable Optane once the encryption has finished. Would appear that's solved it - Laptop works as I would would expect for this spec. Still think it's worth pulling out the HDD and put a SSD in at some point, but for now its ok and encrypted.

 

A bit more testing and I'm happy to let this loose.
